Yoga Teacher Training Bali: Where To Become A Certified Yoga Teacher On The Island

Whether it’s Vinyasa yoga, Hatha yoga, Kundalini yoga, meditation practices, or another branch of yogic science that appeals to you, you’re going to have no problem finding a yoga teacher training course in Bali to get you fully up to speed with best practices.

This paradise island is one of the world’s centres of yoga teaching and there are plenty of yoga instructors in Bali, who can ensure you are certified by the Yoga Alliance to teach anywhere in the world.

We’ve done our homework for you and in addition to some insights about Bali and yoga, we’ve found the best 22 yoga teacher training courses in Bali for you.

Why Do Your Yoga Teacher Training Course In Bali?

Girl practicing yoga on fitness mat in yard

So, if India is where yoga comes from, why would you choose Bali rather than book a flight to an ashram somewhere?

Well, let’s be fair about this. India is not most people’s idea of an easy destination for yoga teacher training or, indeed, much else.

If you think the Bali belly might be a problem on the island, you’re going to find it’s a near guarantee to have an upset stomach in India. The English writer William Dalrymple moved to India and has lived there for nearly 20 years and says he still gets an upset stomach every week!

Then, there are the issues that face solo female travellers in India, who are the very people for whom yoga teacher training in Bali is appealing. Bali isn’t a hotbed of Eve-teasing and harassment.

Most of all, though, it’s worth noting that Bali is Hindu and shares a lot of the culture that gave rise to yoga. It’s a place of spirituality and joy.

You’ll find that Bali is cleaner, safer and quieter than most of India but still has beauty and spirituality to spare. In short, yoga teacher training in Bali is simply less stressful than yoga training in India.

What Areas In Bali Can You Do Yoga Teacher Training In?

Indonesia, Bali, woman practising yoga at the coast at twilight

Nearly every corner of the island has a yoga school or one of the many Bali yoga retreats.

Ubud is one of the most popular destinations for yoga training, as it’s often considered to be the spiritual heartland of the nation. It certainly has the most yoga studios and shalas for your yoga practice.

It’s worth noting that the yoga scene in Ubud was given global attention in the book (and then film) Eat, Pray, Love, which is based on real-life experiences of Bali.

Many people say that Ubud has a “magical energy” that cannot be properly defined until you have experienced it.

However, we’d note that Ubud has, in recent years, become quite commercial and you may find that you want to do your yoga teacher training in Bali in another destination such as Uluwatu, Canggu, or Seminyak.

You might even decide to take your yoga training offshore and visit the Nusa Islands or even the Gili Islands for one of the more remote Bali yoga retreats.

How To Choose The Right Yoga Teacher Training Courses For Your Needs

Yoga teacher training in Bali can be very rewarding. However, it’s also not a cakewalk. You will need to spend at least 200 hours learning at your Bali yoga teacher training at a registered yoga school.

You will learn a host of yoga practices and related techniques. It’s more than just daily yoga classes, it’s a deep insight into the yogic lifestyle and a comprehensive yoga course designed to bring out the best in you.

You will study yogic philosophy, practice yoga teaching, observe yoga biomechanics at work, and, by the end of the course, become an authentic yoga teacher.

And there are hundreds of training courses in Bali to choose from when it comes to yoga courses. So, before you start looking and start to feel overwhelmed, it’s a good idea to think about how you will choose your course.

We’d recommend making a list of the following:

  • Your reasons for studying – what are you looking to get out of this beyond becoming a confident yoga teacher?

  • Your preferred style of yoga – are you looking to master asana practice, hatha yoga, ashtanga vinyasa yoga, etc? Ensure the yogic practices that most appeal to your personal practice are represented will make it easier to complete the course.

  • Your budget – you want to consider the financial side of things, but also your time budget. Not everyone can rush off to Bali for 500 hours of yoga practice. Be realistic about what you can spare for this experience.

  • Your preferred location – if only Ubud will do, for example, be sure about that before you review yoga teacher training in Bali, it makes it easy to cut out other areas.

  • The school’s reputation – these training courses in Bali are a big investment of time and effort. You should look to do your Bali yoga teacher training with a reputable school with instructors that practice yoga in the way you want. You will become a better yoga instructor if you have teachers you can model yourself on.

What Kind Of Yoga Training Leads To Becoming A Certified Yoga Teacher?

yoga practicing 2023 11 27 05 36 28 utc

The basic Yoga Alliance certification requires a 200-hour yoga teacher training program. Depending on how much time you want to put in each day, this will usually take between 15 and 30 days to complete.

We’d recommend opting for 30 days, as 15 days can be quite brutal to try and fit this much practice into, and you will lose something from the experience.

All the courses in Bali will cover the physical side of yoga (that is meditation techniques, asanas, etc.) as well as the theoretical side of yoga (philosophy, anatomy, etc.)

You will also be required to undertake plenty of actual teaching practice where you lead students in lessons to ensure you can get the best results.

There is another teacher training course that runs for 300 hours after you complete the first course and this advanced certification is often essential if you want to earn the best rates of pay as a yoga teacher.

It is possible to combine these two programs for 500-hour intensive training courses over a period of about 60 days.

You may also find different schools, such as Yin Yoga, offer additional training options in blocks of 50 hours that can enhance your personal practice but aren’t required for your yoga teacher training course.

Some of the schools in Bali, now offer online yoga teacher training but we’ve no experience of this kind of training to gauge how effective it is (or isn’t).

Yoga Teacher Training, Bali: The Different Types Of Yoga And Training Packages Available

Slim faceless woman practicing yoga on beach

There are so many different styles of yoga and you can find a yoga teacher training course here in Bali for nearly all of them.

Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga, Hatha yoga, Yin Yoga, Yoga Nidra, etc. are all represented here.

However, if you’re not sure which kind of yoga you want to teach, it’s a good idea to with either the Hatha yoga (which is the most traditional form of yoga) or a multi-style approach where you get to do a little of everything.

We’d encourage you to spend 6-12 months at a yoga school going 2-3 times a week to master most yoga poses, etc. in your chosen style before coming to a teacher training in Bali.

Once you’ve done this, you should be ready to join one of the 200-hour or 500-hour intense yoga programs for yoga teachers in Bali.

How Much Will You Spend On Yoga Teacher Training In Bali?

Let’s assume you’re talking about the regular 200-hour yoga teacher training courses and that you’re going for a reasonably priced yoga retreat to take your yoga courses, then you can expect to pay around $2,000 USD (that’s about $3,000 AUD) for your instruction.

Most of these yoga courses will also include day trips and may include food as well as, of course, yoga sessions. Some will even include your accommodation at this price, though most will expect an additional (but reasonable) fee for this.

Overall teacher training in Bali at a yoga retreat tends to be good value but it’s not exceptionally cheap and you may find that apart from the cost of accommodation, you’re not saving a fortune when compared to studying at home.

The big advantage of learning in Bali is that you will find that the yogic practices on the island tend to be cutting-edge and that the instructors are all highly qualified and experienced.

Always Check The Reviews On Yoga School Before You Commit To Anything

We’ve vetted the 22 teacher training courses in Bali that we’ve listed here, however, things can change and they often do.

The yoga movement has seen a few #metoo moments over the year and even a school where no such ethical breach takes place can go downhill if the instructors leave and are replaced with less competent individuals.

So, we strongly recommend that you spend some time checking out online reviews for your preferred school and see what the most recent students have to say about their time at the establishment.

A Yoga Alliance qualification is important, but so is your health, welfare and wellbeing during the course of your own study and that means making an informed decision before booking your course.

We must stress that FINNS cannot be held responsible for any issues with a given yoga school on the list below – we make our recommendations in good faith but have no commercial interest in any of these schools.

FAQs

How Much Do Yoga Teachers Make In Bali?

Bali is not somewhere that a yoga teacher is likely to find a financially rewarding yoga practice. On average instructors on the island working for a yoga school or at one of the island’s yoga retreats make around 300,000 IDR ($20 USD or $30 AUD) per class they deliver.

Unfortunately, there are also a lot of yoga teachers on the island and they’re all trying to teach yoga for cash, so unless you have a lot of yoga knowledge then you may find that even a 300,000 IDR a session wage is very elusive.

You will at a minimum need to have graduated from one of the yoga teacher training programs listed above to have any hope of becoming a yoga teacher in Bali. People expect a registered yoga teacher here on the island.

And if you’re thinking of creating your own Bali yoga retreats, you should be aware that you can’t legally run any kind of yoga school here in Bali without the right visa and a business license (which are very expensive, particularly for a new yoga instructor).

How Long Is Yoga Teacher Training In Bali?

That depends on the yoga philosophy you’re following, and the yoga teacher training program that you choose to follow.

The best yoga teacher training is the 200-hour basic yoga teacher training followed by a 300-hour advanced program. That’s 500 hours in total.

This will result in certification from a body like the Yoga Alliance which is recognized globally and assures potential employers that your yoga teacher training course was of an appropriate standard.

There’s more to teaching yoga than just mastering yoga postures and breathing techniques to be a confident yoga teacher, you will need to ensure that you understand a teaching methodology, have had substantial teaching practice and understand things like restorative yoga, yoga wisdom and how they can be combined to deliver personal growth.

Should I Do Yoga Teacher Training In Bali?

Relaxing yoga session in tropical paradise with woman in yellow outfit surrounded by palm trees and steps

If you want to do your yoga training on a paradise island with some of the world’s most qualified yoga teachers, then Bali is a pretty good place to do your yoga teacher training course.

However, we should note that yoga teacher training here in Bali isn’t much cheaper than it is in places like Australia and a Bali yoga school probably won’t save you a fortune.

The only real difference is in accommodation costs which are often lower here on the island than in Western countries.

Yoga teacher training in Bali is a very competitive market and the yoga schools have invested substantial amounts of money in the facilities where you develop your yoga practice and into marketing and that all has to be paid for somehow.

The schools here are considered to offer some of the best yoga teacher training in the world, however, and there’s no doubt that there’s a lot of yoga knowledge here.

How To Become A Yoga Teacher In Bali?

Yoga teacher training courses in Bali don’t always lead to a job offer with a yoga school here, in fact, it’s fairly rare for a yoga teacher to be appointed based on completing a school’s yoga teacher training courses.

If you want to work on the island, you will need either to be sponsored by a Bali yoga school or one of the Bali yoga retreats, in which case, they will do the paperwork and get your work visa (KITAS), etc.

However, if you intend to conduct your own yoga retreats, you will need to arrange a KITAS yourself through an agency.

The current price for this kind of visa is 17,500,000 IDR (that’s $1,200 USD or $1,750 AUD) for the processing. You also have to make a deposit of $1,200 USD ($1,800 AUD) against the taxes you will pay during your time in Indonesia.

This visa lasts for 12 months and can take up to two months from the date of application to be issued.

We should also note that this kind of visa is not entirely on the “up and up” and you might find that if Balinese immigration cracks down on yoga retreats here in Bali, that it might not be sufficient for you to stay in Bali.

What Is 200 Hours Of Yoga Teacher Training In Bali?

The 200-hour yoga teacher training courses in Bali are a level 1 Yoga Alliance certification program that enables you to teach yoga anywhere in the world where the Yoga Alliance is recognised.

This kind of yoga teacher training is the bare minimum for most yoga school hiring managers and most yoga teachers will have completed the advanced 300-hour yoga teacher training courses, in addition to the level 1 course.

That means that yoga teacher training is not an insignificant commitment in terms of both time and money.

You should carefully assess the value of yoga teacher training for your career and circumstances prior to investing in a course.

Is Yoga Teacher Training Worth The Money?

We think whether your yoga teacher training is worth the money or not is going to be down to you. We need to stress that a job in a yoga school does not pay a large amount of money and even working on yoga retreats is unlikely to lead to large cash rewards.

Typically, the going rate for a class is about $20 USD ($30 AUD) and by the time you have paid for your courses, accommodation, etc. to an advanced level, you may well have invested $8,000 USD ($12,000 AUD).

At $20/hour it will take 400 hours, that’s 10 weeks of full-time work (something most yoga instructors cannot do because of the physical demands of that much yoga and the fact that most yoga schools don’t work like that), to pay for the course.

So nobody gets rich from yoga teacher training. However, there’s no doubt that learning the yoga postures, yoga philosophy, your own yoga style, meditation techniques, etc. can be very beneficial in day-to-day life and potentially these benefits could be worth the investment in a reputable yoga school.

We’d strongly encourage you to decide whether your yoga classes will bring you sufficient benefit before you sign up for a yoga course.

Which Country Has The Best Yoga Instructors?

Bali regularly tops the list for affordable yoga teacher training and the yoga courses offered on the island are very good.

Yoga teacher training in Bali is considered to first rate and the majority of courses here are Yoga Alliance certified.

Other places that are considered to be good for yoga teacher trainings are Thailand, Costa Rica, Portugal, and India.

India is, of course, the birthplace of yoga but it doesn’t necessarily offer the best yoga teacher training programs.

Are Yoga Teacher Trainings In Bali Good Value For Money?

It depends on what you’re looking for from yoga teacher training courses. If you learn to be a yoga teacher in Bali, you’re not likely to save a fortune compared to studying at home.

However, you are guaranteed to get some of the best yoga teacher training around and for your yoga program to include some additional benefits that you won’t commonly get at home such as day trips and excursions.

You will also find that accomodation at Bali yoga retreats or near Bali’s yoga schools is very reasonably priced and that the overall cost of a 200-hour yoga teacher training program is competitive when compared to Australia or another Western country.

If you intend to do the 500-hour yoga teacher training courses then, you will probably save some money compared to home, but it may not be as much money saved as you’d hope, either.

Final Thoughts On Doing A Yoga Teacher Training Course In Bali

Whether you intend to do a 500-hour yoga teacher training program here in Bali, or something a little more manageable, you’ve got plenty of options for great places to learn.

You’ll be able to master the yoga practices of any yoga style and feel confident to teach those practices to others by the time that you finish.

Learning to teach yoga requires a considerable input of both time and money, so make sure to choose your school with care and really dig down into the fine details before you sign on the dotted line.
