Groceries Bali: Where To Do Your Grocery Shopping On The Island

Bali has plenty of places for you to pick up fresh produce from a humble fish market in Jimbaran to the best supermarkets on the island overflowing with imported goods.

Our guide will help you decide where to buy your groceries in Bali and what to expect when you do.

Convenience Stores

There’s a convenience store on nearly every street corner in Bali and often several more on each street. Some are branded such as Circle K or Indomaret, others are simply mom-and-pop stores.

Some have competitive prices, others are a bit more expensive than the supermarkets in Bali, some carry fresh produce, some do not, and most are simply a one-stop shop for daily necessities and tend to focus on Indonesian products rather than imported products.

The big advantage of these stores is that they’re conveniently located near to where you are and don’t require a journey to go to the supermarket.

The Best Supermarkets In Bali

The best supermarkets carry a range of goods from organic produce to high-quality products and imported lines as well as top-quality local goods.

They don’t always have the best prices when compared to local markets but they are more convenient and tend to bring everything you need together under one roof.

Bintang Supermarket – Ubud, Denpasar And Seminyak

Bintang means “star”, so the Bintang Supermarket chain is not to be confused with the beer of the same name. It’s just the “Star Supermarket”.

They have three branches, the best known of which is in Ubud. It’s Ubud’s biggest supermarket and quite famous locally.

They offer online shopping and home delivery services from their website too.

Pepito Supermarkets – Everywhere

Pepito is the biggest chain of supermarkets on the island and there’s a Pepito in almost every location in Bali. They even have a market in Lovina which is quite out of the way for most tourists here in Bali.

Many Pepito marts also have their own baker, delicatessen and cafe onsite. They carry a huge range of products and many of them are imported.

Their website hints at an online ordering and delivery system, but to be fair we’ve never managed to make it work.

They do have a loyalty program though and you can sign up using their app. This gives you cash back on every purchase that you make.

Frestive Supermarkets – Seminyak, Canggu and Pererenan

Freshtive is a small chain of supermarkets which, for now, serves the beach towns of Seminyak and Canggu as well as having a branch in Pererenan.

They also specialize in imported goods but oddly, the range of products that they stock is very different from the range carried by Pepito and they are almost complementary in their offerings rather than competitors.

Freshtive branches also have a local chicken and pork franchise based outside their branches which sell whole cooked chickens and pork joints, which is a nice touch.

Hardy’s Supermarket – Now Arta Sedana Sanur

There aren’t a lot of supermarket options in Sanur, but one you could always rely on was Hardy’s but they appear to have been taken over in 2023 and are now Arta Sedana Sanur.

Not much has changed on the inside, mind you, it’s still a fairly standard supermarket but with more emphasis on local goods rather than imported lines.

It’s not the biggest supermarket in Bali but it is the biggest and best in Sanur, for now.

Lottemart – Denpasar-Serangan

lotte mart

This is more of a bulk-buy warehouse rather than a supermarket and that means you get very good prices on items but you do have to buy a large amount of those items to get the deal.

There’s only one store on the island and it’s in Denpasar which means it doesn’t see many expats or tourists.

It’s completely open to the public though and you don’t need a membership to shop here.

Matahari Supermarket – Kuta

This is a cross between a supermarket and a department store and it’s main selling point is that it’s in Kuta Square and therefore hugely convenient to anyone staying in Kuta.

However, it’s more expensive than most other supermarkets here in Bali and it doesn’t have the biggest selection of goods.

Grand Lucky Supermarket – Seminyak/Kuta

This Sunset Road based supermarket is a good place to stock up on groceries and dry goods if you’re near Seminyak.

The prices here are very reasonable and there’s a decent range of products to be found too.

Coco Supermarket – Seminyak and Ubud

The Seminyak branch is on Eat Street and the Ubud branch is in the center of town.

Be warned, it’s almost impossible to get to the Seminyak branch with a car due to the traffic in the area.

Otherwise, it’s a decent supermarket though prices are a little on the high side.

Papaya Supermarket (Japanese Supermarket)

If you want the ingredients for an amazing Japanese meal, you can find them at Papaya Supermarket in Badung.

It’s not a huge place but it carries the greatest range of imported Japanese goods on the island.

Note: Carrefour is now permanently closed. The French supermarket chain seems to have pulled out of Bali for the moment and there’s no indication if it will return.

Markets In Bali

There are also plenty of fresh markets in and around Bali where you can pick up some tasty treats at low prices.

Haggling is customary unless the prices are marked as fixed, so don’t be afraid to negotiate.

Some of our favourite markets include:

  • Badung Market

  • Candi Kuning Market

  • Jimbaran Market

  • Kedongang Market

  • Kuta Market

  • Semarapura Market

  • Sindhu Market

  • Taman Sari Market
