Peguyangan Waterfall: A Delightful Treat On Nusa Penida Island

Peguyangan Waterfall is one of the nicest places to visit in Nusa Penida. However, many visitors never get to see it as it’s not on the day trip itineraries of most tour operators.

We think it’s worth staying a few days on the island and getting to see Peguyangan Waterfall Nusa Penida for yourself. Here’s what you need to know before you book your trip.

Where Is Peguyangan Waterfall?

Peguyangan Waterfall Nusa Penida FINNS BALI MAP

Peguyangan Waterfall is on the Southeast coast of Nusa Penida island (the other Nusa islands are Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan) which is off the coast of mainland Bali.

It is important to note that the name of this waterfall is often abbreviated to “Guyangan Waterfall Nusa Penida”

Address: 6G99+FRR, Batukandik, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, Bali 80771, Indonesia

How To Get To Peguyangan Waterfall, Nusa Penida Island?

A speed boat - Nusa Ceningan Island

You will first need to get to Nusa Penida from Bali. You can get a ferry or a fast boat from various ports on the mainland and it’s not very expensive.

We should warn you that the seas can get a bit rough during the wet season, though and then the trip can feel much longer.

You can join a day trip to Nusa Penida too, but it’s unlikely that the Peguyangan Waterfall will be on the tour itinerary as it’s a bit out of the way and most people see the Peguyangan Waterfall Nusa Penida under their own steam.

To get there you will need to rent a motor scooter, we don’t recommend riding scooters in Bali and if you are going to do it – we recommend that you ensure you are 100% road-legal and have insurance.

The roads on to Peguyangan Waterfall Nusa Penida are not great and it’s all too easy to fall off and hurt yourself. However, there’s nothing like the traffic on Nusa Penida that there is in Bali, so if you go slow, you should be safe.

This attraction is a bit out of the way on Nusa Penida island and you will want a full tank of gas to make sure that you get to this location and then back again.

If you do get stuck on your journey, then the locals will usually be happy to help you out – but there’s no guarantee that you will encounter any locals out here.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Peguyangan Waterfall?

The best time to visit this waterfall and, indeed, all waterfalls in Bali, is at the end of the rainy season when the water flow is heaviest.

Is There An Entrance Fee For Peguyangan Waterfall?

There are no entrance fees at this site and you can visit Peguyangan Waterfall for free.

However, you are expected to pay 5,000 IDR if you want to park in their parking area and an additional 10,000 IDR per person before you start on the blue stairs as a sarong rental fee.

What To Expect At Peguyangan Waterfall

This waterfall is part of the Pura Segard Kidul & Guyangan temple complex and as such it’s a sacred place. You will be expected to wear a sarong while you on the grounds here in Nusa Penida. You can get in a lot of trouble for disrespecting temple dress codes in Bali.

There are monkeys running about the place and while they are not quite as cheeky, aggressive and thieving as those at some of the better-known attractions in Bali, you should still be cautious around them – they are wild animals.

It’s best to avoid injury or bites in Nusa Penida as there’s not much in the way of a health service.

There are three natural rock pools at the base of Peguyangan Waterfall Nusa Penida but you are not allowed to swim in them.

The best time to visit is when there’s a ceremony taking place at the temple and the whole area comes alive with offerings and locals in traditional dress.

Steep Stairs

The blue stairs are very steep and you will find that they can get very slippery, particularly those that run from the temple to the pools.

We’d strongly recommend wearing shoes with decent grip to visit this waterfall as you don’t want to injure yourself at Peguyangan Waterfall, it’s a long way from any kind of medical service.

Where To Stay Near Peguyangan Waterfall

If you’re just on a day trip, you won’t need any accommodation options but the best of the local accomodation is listed below. We also have a complete guide to Nusa Penida with more tips on where to stay near the ocean in this beautiful place.

  • Waterfall Inn – you can stay almost on top of Peguyangan Waterfall in Nusa Penida if you stay here. It’s a lovely location with spectacular views and excellent service. However, it’s also right out in the middle of nowhere and walking anywhere but the waterfall is not for the faint-hearted. It’s the perfect place to disconnect from the world on your visit.

  • Temeling Jungle Inn – a very beautiful place that is right near Tembeling Beach. The onsite restaurant is excellent and serves superb Indonesian and Western food, which is good because it’s a long walk to anywhere else of note. The owner speaks fluent English and will bend over backwards to ensure that you have a great time on the island.

  • Sebuluh Sunset Hills – a very nice place with views of the jungle. You’re in the jungle so don’t be surprised if you encounter lizards, bats, etc. that’s part and parcel of living in Nusa Penida. However, the rooms are clean and comfortable and the service is very good.

Where To Eat Near Peguyangan Waterfall

There aren’t a huge number of places to eat, though you may find the occasional small warung that is so unused to the internet that there’s no mention of it online at all. Otherwise, the nearest places to Peguyangan Waterfall are:

  • Manta Point Bar & Resto – this isn’t too far from the waterfall and the food is excellent, it’s one of our favourite places to eat in Nusa Penida. The burgers are first rate and it’s almost always busy and packed with foreigners.

  • Warung Makan Rj – a simple and basic warung not too far from the waterfall. The food is traditional Indonesian and while it’s not the best in Bali, it’s not bad at all.

  • Warung The Kroya Panorama Points – this low-cost warung does a great Nasi Goreng which is less oily than usual. The prices are very low and there’s no hidden tax or service charge, the menu price is what you pay.

  • Batang Golden Hills Vila And Resto – a pleasant restaurant in a villa complex. Expect a decent cup of coffee and a varied menu that shifts between Western and Indonesian offerings.

  • Luwak Garden Coffee Shop – we should note that many people refuse to try coffee luwak on ethical grounds, but if you’re looking for a place where the cats run free and aren’t in cages – this is where to find it. They also offer free samples of teas and coffees from across Indonesia.

  • Warung Yan Ti – a serviceable and basic warung with very low prices. You can’t go wrong with ice cream for 10,000 IDR, particularly when you’re out in the middle of nowhere

Things To Do Near Peguyangan Waterfall

This part of Nusa Penida hasn’t got a huge amount of things to do and all the highlights include:

  • Manta Point – this is a lovely clifftop view over the manta rays swimming below and you can see the creatures in the sea below from the cliffside. If you venture down the cliff (there’s an access way, no need to climb, you can walk), you can swim with them and

  • Pura Pehikan Buddhist Temple – if you want to see this lovely Buddhist temple, you will need to do a fairly substantive clifftop hike. It’s worth it, though, not only will you burn some calories but the view is spectacular and the temple is quite lovely. They also have a fresh water supply onsite if you need a drink. Please remember that it is a sacred temple, so be respectful. This is as close to a sacred water temple as you can get on Nusa Penida.

  • Pura Mujaning Tembeling – this place offers breathtaking panoramic views over the Tembeling Beach below as well as being an interesting sacred temple in its own right. You will need to bring your own sarong to enter the grounds as there is no rental/purchase service here.

  • Tembeling Beach – this gorgeous beach with natural rock pools is shielded from the rest of the island by forest and it’s something that most people on a day trip to Nusa Penida island will never see. It’s one of our favourite spots on the island.

  • Sunfish Beach – a beach for only the strongest-willed beach aficionados in Bali. It’s a long arduous mountain bike or motorbike trek to get to the access point – it cannot be tackled on foot, by car or by scooter. However, if you get there, you get a lovely private beach all to yourself for the day – take snacks and drinks, though, there are no vendors within miles of this place. Make sure to stop at Tanjung Sedhihing Lighthouse on your way back.

  • Angel’s Billabong – famous for its natural infinity pool, Angel’s Billabong is still a dangerous place to swim and we’d recommend that you just take photos elsewhere on this blog. Search for great vantage points and stay safe.
