Night Surfing Bali: Ride Floodlit Waves Where The Surf Never Sleeps

Have you ever thought about surfing after dark? Riding those waves with the stars and the moon above you, the sound of music in the background, the cool night breeze… sounds like fun, right?

Well, although it’s limited to a handful of places, night surfing in Bali is definitely a thing!

Thanks to floodlights lighting up the beach, you can now catch the waves after sunset. It’s a niche opportunity, mostly suited for the intermediate to more experienced surfers, but the vibe is pure island paradise!

FINNS Beach Club – Berawa Beach

Night Surfing (21 of 42)

Every night between 7 pm and midnight, powerful floodlights are switched on at FINNS, illuminating the sea and creating a magical setting for night surfers.

The sea is free for anyone to enter and join in, and you don’t need to book ahead, but the waves won’t be too busy, don’t worry.

The west coast waves at night time are perfect for anyone from intermediate surfers up to more advanced surfers, but any beginner surfers shouldn’t be put off; anyone can give it a go if they have the confidence.

The vibe here is off the hook, especially with the music drifting over the waves. And hey, this is not just the place for surfers; those enjoying themselves at the beach club can take a stroll down the beach and watch in awe as people hit the waves on the floodlit sea.

The beach here is already renowned for its sweeping ocean views, but, honestly, the night surfing is a pretty breathtaking thing to watch, and we never tire of it.

Of course, when you’re not surfing, don’t forget to join in the fun at the beach club, with no end of bars, food, pools, live music and of course, good beach vibes.

Komune Resort – Keramas Beach

Night Surfing 3

Over on the quieter east coast of Bali, there’s a slightly different approach to night surfing at the Komune Resort.

Here, things are a bit more structured. From 7 pm to midnight, floodlights illuminate the reef break out front for night surf shows, great to watch from the comfort of the resort.

If you want to join in, you’ll need to book ahead. They run limited surf sessions for up to six surfers at a time, and there’s even an early-morning slot between 4 am and 6 am for those chasing waves before sunrise.

The vibe here is more chilled and exclusive, ideal if you’re looking for something quieter and more controlled. But for that spontaneous, high-energy beach buzz where anyone can paddle out under the lights and join the fun, we reckon FINNS still takes the win.

FAQS

Is Canggu Or Seminyak Better For Surfing?

Canggu, Seminyak and Kuta on the west coast are all great places for surfing in Bali, and they’re very famous for it.

Of course, we like Berawa Beach in Canggu the best, home to FINNS Beach Club!

What Gear Do I Need For Night Surfing In Bali?

Night Surfing (33 of 42)

You’ll want a board you’re comfortable with and a leash for safety.

Bali’s water can be warm during the day, especially in the dry season, but the waves can get cold, even more so during the nighttime. If you get cold easily, then a wetsuit is recommended. Reef booties are a smart idea to protect your feet from sharp coral and rocks.

Floodlights do a good job, but some surfers bring small waterproof LED lights for extra visibility. Always check the surf conditions before heading out.

Are There Black Sand Beaches On The East Coast?

Yes, there are. In fact, Bali’s east coast is very famous for its black sand beaches. This phenomenon happens when volcanic rocks, thrown into the air during volcanic activity, land in the sea. Then, over time, erode against the shore to form the soft black sand.

Is Green Balls Beach Good For Surfing?

Green Balls Beach? We’ve never heard of that one, you’re probably getting confused with Green Bowl Beach, near Uluwatu in the Bukit Peninsula, right in the south of Bali.

If that’s the case, then no, not really. While much of Uluwatu is great for surfing, the water at Green Bowl is generally quite shallow. You can still catch some waves during high tide, but it’s nothing special.

Which Beach In Bali Has The Most Powerful Waves?

Padang Padang or Uluwatu Beach, down on the Bukit Peninsula, are probably the heaviest. These breaks are known for big, fast, world-class waves and shallow reefs, so they’re really only for experienced surfers.

When the swell’s on, you’ll see pros getting deep in the barrel, but it’s definitely not the place to test your skills if you’re still learning.

Can I Night Surf On A Regular Beach In Bali With No Floodlights?

Night surfing without floodlights in Bali isn’t common or recommended. Without lighting, it’s hard to see waves, other surfers, and hazards like rocks, coral reefs, or strong currents. These factors make night surfing risky on unlit beaches.

For a safe night surf experience, it’s best to stick to designated floodlit spots like FINNS Beach Club. Otherwise, daytime surfing is the safer choice on Bali’s amazing beaches.

Final Thoughts On Surfing At Night In Bali

Night surfing isn’t exactly your everyday (or night!) activity, and that’s what makes it so special!

Whether you’re soaking up the high energy at FINNS on Berawa Beach or heading east towards Keramas Beach for something a bit different, surfing under the stars is an experience that you won’t forget.

It’s mostly aimed at intermediate to experienced surfers, but as long as you have confidence, then you’re good to go.

If you’re up for something a bit different, fewer people, cooler air, the sound of music in the distance, and the thrill of riding the nighttime waves, then this is something that you can’t miss!
