Diamond Beach Bali: The Ultimate Guide To The Most Incredible Beach On Nusa Penida Island

You have to work a little to get to Diamond Beach, which is hidden away at the bottom of a cliff face on Nusa Penida.

However, it’s worth the effort you put in, and Diamond Beach is one of the most incredible beaches in Bali.

Our guide to Diamond Beach will help you get the most out of a trip to one of Bali’s less visited but most beautiful beaches.

Where Is Diamond Beach?

Diamond Beach is on the Eastern Tip of the largest of the three Nusa Islands, Nusa Penida.

The address is Pejukutan, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, Bali 80771, Indonesia

How do you get to Diamond Beach, Nusa Penida Island?

To get to Diamond Beach from mainland Bali, you’re going to need to get to Nusa Penida and then to Diamond Beach.

To get to Nusa Penida, you need to head to Sanur Harbor near Sanur Beach or to Padang Bai and buy some ferry tickets or fast boat tickets to the island. Note: The ferry only goes from Padang Bai. If you’re in Sanur, it’s the fast boat you need.

Sanur is around 45 minutes from Seminyak and Canggu and half an hour from Kuta.

The ferry is the cheapest way to get to Nusa Penida, but you don’t go directly to Nusa Penida. In fact, you stop in Nusa Lembongan and then need to get to Nusa Penida on either another ferry without or without the use of a moped or taxi service.

If you opt for the fast boat, you will pay a bit more (but it’s not a lot more), and this goes directly to Nusa Penida. If you’re only coming for a day trip, this is definitely your best option.

It is also possible to arrange tickets through companies like the Bali Res Centre (see their contact details in the FAQs below), which include hotel pickup and fast boat tickets.

Officially, you are only allowed 30 Kg of luggage on a boat to the Nsua Islands per person, but as nobody weighs your luggage, this rule never seems to be enforced.

One thing we should note is that unless you own your own scooter, you won’t be able to take it on the ferry, and scooters are not allowed on the fast boat at all.

We’ve experienced taking a scooter on this ferry, and we don’t recommend it. The roads are not great in Nusa Penida at all.

If you rent a scooter in Nusa Lembongan, you need to ensure you have permission to take it to Nusa Penida (the same is true if you rent a pushbike).

Once you’re in Nusa Penida, it’s pretty easy to get to Diamond Beach, and you can either rent a scooter or take a local taxi (this can be a car or a scooter) with a driver.

As usual, we don’t really recommend riding your own scooter. There’s not as much traffic in Nusa Penida as there is in Bali, but the roads aren’t well-maintained, which can still lead to serious accidents.

If you do opt for a driver, make sure you spend some time explaining what you want to do – you may need Google Maps for this. Most drivers in Nusa Penida don’t speak fluent English.

You could also talk to the Bali Res Centre (contact details in the FAQs below) about having a local guide take you around and show you the sights in Nusa Penida.

Then it’s just a question of getting Diamond Beach into your itinerary and heading off to see it. It is about an hour’s drive from Toya Pakeh Harbour in Nusa Penida to Diamond Beach.

What Is The Best Time Of Year To Visit Diamond Beach, Nusa Penida Island?

You can visit Diamond Beach at any time of the year, and like most places in Bali, Diamond Beach is nice at any time of year.

You will find it’s cooler and less humid in the dry season (from March to November), but even in the worst of the rainy season, Diamond Beach will get roughly 8 hours of sunshine each day. That’s more than enough to have fun there.

Does Diamond Beach, Nusa Penida, Have Opening Hours?

No, but there is a car parking lot and an entrance booth, which will charge an entrance fee at Diamond Beach.

You will pay 10,000 IDR per person for access to Diamond Beach, plus an additional 5,000 IDR for the car park.

Atuh Beach is right next door to Diamond Beach, and it’s fine to use the same car park to see them both.

Please note that you must pay your entrance fee in cash. They can’t take cards, and ideally, you will need small local bills. They don’t accept foreign currencies and might not have any chance to give you.

About Diamond Beach Viewpoint

Before you go down to Diamond Beach, Nusa Penida, it’s a good idea to visit the Diamond Beach viewpoint overlooking the beach and the bay before it.

This is an amazing place to take photographs for your Instagram, and the turquoise waters really pop in the images.

You can also visit the Atuh Beach viewpoint from here, which is just the opposite. Atuh Beach is very popular and worth visiting after you have finished on Diamond Beach.

What To Expect At Diamond Beach, Nusa Penida Island

If you had arrived in Nusa Penida before 2018, you wouldn’t have been able to visit Diamond Beach at all. It was completely sealed off from the outside world by the cliff here.

Now, they have carved stairs into the limestone of the cliff, but it takes about 20 minutes to climb down the stairs, and it is not suitable for wheelchair users.

You should wear solid shoes, not thongs, as at the bottom of the cliff, you will need to climb over some rocks to get to Diamond Beach, and they can be very slippery.

It’s important only to head down onto Diamond Beach at low tide as the sea here can get very rough at other times and actively be dangerous.

This is not a good beach to get into the water. Diamond Beach’s waves contain large amounts of broken rock and coral, and it’s painful when the water crashes over you.

However, if you time things right, you can run off Diamond Beach for a cooling soak in the ocean and then run back to Diamond Beach when the waves start heading in.

About Diamond Beach Bali

diamond nest photo spot

Diamond Beach is named after the diamond-shaped rock nearby, and it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in Bali.

It has two parts, and if you’re visiting Diamond Beach, you’ll want to check them both out.

The first part of Diamond Beach is the area of green mossy rocks and tidal rock pools. This is quite attractive, but sadly, it gets a lot of trash that accumulates here as it’s washed ashore.

Because it’s quite out of the way, this beautiful beach rarely sees trash clean-up crews, unlike more popular beaches.

So, if you feel like doing a good deed when visiting Diamond Beach, you could always bring a trash bag, fill it and then take it with you when you leave.

The rest of the beach is covered in soft, white sand, is shaded by coconut palm trees, and has plenty of small caves that you can explore.

Behind you, there is a huge wall of rock from the local cliff, which is very imposing.

There is a small warung on this beach, and that means you can get snacks and cold beers when visiting Diamond Beach. There’s not a huge amount of choice available, but it’s enough.

Can You Swim At Diamond Beach, Nusa Penida Island?

You can, but you probably won’t want to. The waves contain large particles that hurt when they crash on you, and there’s a lot of coral and rock underfoot, too.

The underlying reef might be attractive to look at, but it’s painful on the feet. If you’re lucky, you might see a few turtles on the beach, though.
