If you’re looking to get off the beaten track in Bali and explore something beautiful and natural, then the Banyumala Twin Waterfalls might be exactly what you’re looking for.
It’s one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the island and far from the crowds of the beach resorts. Our guide will share everything you need to know to plan your visit.
Where Is Banyumala Waterfall?
Visiting the Banyumala Waterfall means heading to the North of Bali and getting off the beaten path.
It’s about a 45-minute drive from Munduk village and Munduk Moding Plantation.
How To Get To Banyumala Twin Waterfalls
If you want to see the Banyumala Twin Waterfalls, then it’s a long drive from most of the main parts of the island. 2-3 hours there and then the same back.
We’d recommend that you stay in either Munduk or Lovina and explore more of the region rather than making a special trip to the falls.
You can get out this way if you hire a private driver and car, which is the safest and most convenient way to do it.
You could also join a tour (see the FAQs for details on how to book a tour with the Bali Res Centre).
What we don’t recommend is that you rent scooters for this trip. The roads out in this part of Bali are not great, and it’s a long drive.
That means the risks of accidents, which are always high at any time, increase dramatically.
We strongly encourage you to take a car or a tour to this part of Bali, and if you do want to visit the falls on a motorbike rental, you do so from a more local starting point.
When Is The Best Time To Visit Banyumala Twin Waterfall?
You can, of course, enjoy these falls year-round, but unlike most things that are better in the island’s dry season, there’s a lot to be said for visiting the Banyumala Twin Waterfalls in the rainy season.
That’s because, as with most waterfalls, the rains add volume to the water curtain, and the twin falls thunder and appear far more impressive in the wet season than they do in the dry season.
The Banyumala Twin Waterfall opening times are from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on most days except for the festival of Nyepi in April, when all attractions in Bali are closed, and you are expected to spend the day at home.
These falls don’t get as many visitors as most fall in Bali, but you can maximize your chances of getting them to yourself by arriving early in the morning.
Is There An Entrance Fee For Banyumala Twin Waterfall?
Yes, though the entrance fee for the Banyumala Twin Waterfalls is nothing to get worked up about.
It costs 30,000 IDR per person to get into the twin waterfalls, with an additional 2,000 IDR if you want to use the car park.
The parking area is reasonably secure, but unless you have a private driver to watch over your vehicle, it’s best not to leave any valuables in your car unattended.
What To Expect At Banyumala Twin Waterfall?
When you arrive at the car park, you’ll need to follow a path to the waterfall.
This is not the best maintained of paths, and it’s downhill and occasionally very steep.
It’s not a long walk, but it’s harder than it might appear if you glance at the map. Allow 15-20 minutes for the walk, and be prepared for some exertions.
They say that these are twin falls, but, in reality, they’re hundreds of falls that all converge into two main flows.
It’s very pretty and pleasant. You can use the pagoda to sit under, and there is a changing room on-site if you want to swim.
However, be warned that the water here is much, much colder than you might be used to – these falls are high up in the mountains.
There are some colourful displays of flowers if you arrive at the right time of year, which can add flavour to your Instagram shots.
FAQs
How Long Is The Walk To Banyumala Waterfall?
It’s a very short walk, which is less than a mile round trip.
However, it’s a reasonably challenging walk to Banyumala Twin Waterfalls, and the round trip takes about 22 minutes.
The route is popular with hikers in this area and can get a little busy in the afternoons.
How Far Is The Banyumala Waterfall From Ubud?
It’s quite a long journey from Ubud to the Banyumala twin waterfall, and you can expect to spend about 2 hours on the road.
For that reason alone, we don’t recommend that you take a scooter from Ubud to Banyumala Twin Waterfalls. It’s a long drive, particularly if you’re not used to Bali’s roads.
What Is The Closest Waterfall To Kuta?
It’s fair to say that the waterfalls in Bali are not really close to Kuta, and you’re going to spend a couple of hours on the road to get to any waterfall.
We think that Tegenungan Waterfall is probably the closest to Kuta, but it’s not possible for us to measure the distance for each fall to Kuta, and even if it were, you might not be staying where we measured to.
What Are The Names Of The Waterfalls In Bali?
A few of the most popular waterfalls include Tegenungan, Sekumpul, Tukad Cepung, Banyumala Twin Waterfalls, GitGit, NungNung, Kanto Lampo and Munduk.
There are many more Bali waterfalls to explore, though, and they’re all great.
The Balinese word for waterfall is “air terjun”. “Air” is water, and “Terjun” means to “dive”. So the literal translation would be “diving water”.
How Long Does It Take To Do The Banyumala Waterfall?
We think that you can easily spend an hour or two at the Banyumala Twin Waterfall.
It’s not far to walk from the parking lot to the waterfall, but it’s such a nice place that you will probably want to stop for a while.
When we explore Bali, we don’t do it with the intention of ticking off as many things in North Bali (or wherever) as possible, but rather with the intention of enjoying the things we see.
Take some lunch or some snacks and spend some time at the Banyumala Waterfall, and you will be glad that you did.
Which Is The Best Waterfall To Visit In Bali?
There are so many wonderful waterfalls in Bali that we couldn’t pick a favourite among them.
If you value your privacy, then Leke Leke is probably the least visited waterfall in Bali. Gitgit is one of the most famous, and Tibumana Waterfall recently topped a list of the most Instagrammable waterfalls.
We’d advise that you try to see the waterfalls closest to where you’re staying as they’re all beautiful.
Which Waterfall In Bali Is The Easiest To Reach?
The most accessible and beautiful waterfall is probably the Tegenungan Waterfall, which sits at the heart of Ubud Village.
However, we should note that none of the Bali waterfalls is exactly designed for easy access for people with motion impairment.
Wheelchair users will not be able to get to the falls at any location as they all require either a hike through the jungle and/or stairs.
