Many people may leave Bali without hearing about Tangkup Waterfall, let alone visiting it. This is a terrible shame because we think this is such an amazing place and should not be missed.
Here we’ll outline everything you need to know before visiting Tangkup Waterfall, and we’ll also give you some good reasons to go.
Where Is Tangkup Waterfall?
This fantastic waterfall is located in the Gianyar Regency of Bali, in Pupuan Village, about a 45-minute drive north of Ubud, and 90 minutes from Kuta Bali.
To reach Pupuan Village we would recommend either:
Private car and driver – in the safety of a car with the knowledge of a Bali local, you could make a day trip out of this, stopping at other locations on the way to and from Tangkup Waterfall, such as a temple, nearby plantations or even another waterfall. Having the car and driver also ensures your personal belongings are safe. Ask your hotel about booking a driver.
Organised tour – you could visit the waterfall as part of an organised tour. This has the disadvantage of being less personalised, but it can be slightly cheaper, and for solo travellers, it’s a great way of meeting new people. Ask your hotel about booking organised tours.
We never recommend hiring a motorcycle or scooter to explore Bali. The chances are you will not be road legal, which can cause problems with the police and also insurance problems were you to have an accident. Talking of accidents, the roads in Bali can be challenging for even the most experienced rider, and the last thing we want is for you to ruin your time in Bali with an avoidable accident. Besides, no one knows the best locations like a paid driver!
Address: Br Tangkup, Pupuan, Tegallalang, Gianyar Regency, Bali 80561
How To Get To Tangkup Waterfall?
Access to the waterfall is only possible via a short walk from the village. The distance is about 0.6 kilometres. If you’re unsure which way to go, don’t be shy to ask local people for help.
Don’t forget to bring drinks such as a bottle of water to stay hydrated, as it can get hot on that walk, you may want to bring some snacks also.
Likewise don’t forget to take your rubbish away with you to protect the beautiful environment of Bali.
What’s The Best Time To Visit Tangkup Waterfall?
To avoid the crowds and the midday heat, the best time to visit Tangkup Waterfall is morning or afternoon, if you’re lucky, at these times also you may be able to see some traditional Balinese culture as the locals hold this pace to be sacred.
To really get a quiet and personal experience, you could visit late afternoon, but be warned there is no lighting on the trail.
Is There An Entrance Fee For Tangkup Waterfall?
Yes, a small donation of 20,000 IDR ($1.20 US/ $2 AUS) is requested at the beginning of the trail before you continue your journey up to the waterfall. This helps with maintenance and we think it’s a small price to pay.
What To Expect At Tangkup Waterfall?
The trail to Tangkup Waterfall takes you through the lush jungle and at some points past rolling rice fields. Breathe the fresh air, enjoy the walk and soak up the amazing scenery, this is one of those places where the journey there is all part of the experience.
On arrival at the waterfall itself, the first you’ll notice is the sheer height of it, with steep cliffs surrounding you and water crashing down into the pool below. After the journey no doubt you’ll want to get straight into the water to cool off. If you dare to, then hold your breath and stand below the falling water!
Whilst still a hidden gem in Bali, over the years it has become more popular here, so don’t expect to have it all to yourself.

There’s no shortage of restaurants, cafes and warungs nearby. One place we particularly enjoyed is Wana Ayu Jelijih, a chilled-out warung with amazing views just a few minutes away from Tangkup Waterfall.

If you’re interested in culture and would like to visit a local temple, then as with most of Bali there’s no shortage here such as the nearby Pura Alas Jagasari, or the small forest shrine of Pura Beji. If you’re coming directly from the waterfall, please make sure you’re appropriately dressed before visiting any religious sites!
We discovered a fantastic scenic location nearby, the village of Kampung Wisata Timbul. Focused on eco-tourism, the rice fields here are a great spot to grab that Instagram photo you’ve been looking for.
Also worth visiting is the nearby Elephant Safari Park Lodge Bali, just west of the waterfall. If you are concerned about the welfare of the elephants then please don’t worry, this sanctuary stands out in its reviews from welfare activists as taking great care of the elephants here.
As with places to eat, if you’re on an organised tour then other stops may be included in the price, and if you have a paid driver then don’t be afraid to ask them, they may know of things to do and see which even we don’t know about!

Wear lightweight, breathable clothes and sturdy footwear for walking to and around the waterfall, the path can be steep and uneven in places. Consider wearing fast-drying clothes or bringing a spare set in case you get wet.
If you’re planning to swim then consider bringing bathing clothes. For women, a bathing suit may be a better choice than a bikini, although unless the waterfall is on temple grounds you can pretty much wear whatever you feel like. The water can feel anywhere from cold, to cool, to warm, but it always feels refreshing!
Is Tangkup Waterfall close to Undisan Village?
Not really, Undisan Village, another popular Bali location, is about a one-hour drive southeast of Tangkup Waterfall. This could also be a place worth visiting though, with various things to see such as Tukud Cepung Waterfall and a bit outside of town the famous Pura Kehen Temple.
