This isn’t particularly off the beaten track and you could use a Grab or Gojek to get to the Hidden Canyon with a reasonable expectation of being able to get a ride back when you’re done.

Others will opt to come with a local guide or a tour guide on an organized tour which is a good way to see the Hidden Canyon, the best waterfalls in the area and the rice fields and other beautiful surroundings in the area.

However, we’d recommend hiring a private car and a driver. This isn’t going to cost very much (500,000 IDR which, as we go to press, is about $35 USD or $50 AUD) and you will get a car, driver and petrol for 8 hours included in the fee.

Then you can go from the Hidden Canyon to the local rice terraces and stop at some of the food stalls along the way for snacks and drinks.

The Hidden Canyon Beji Guwang is only open from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. so it’s a good idea to aim for some time between those two time slots.

This isn’t one of the island’s most popular attractions and you should be fine to rock up at any time.

We would note that during the rainy season, the Oos River gets deeper than usual and it’s harder to reach the Hidden Canyon.

Yes, and it’s not the cheapest of attractions. The admission fee starts at 200,000 IDR for one person, and you must engage the services of a local guide if you’re not with a tour guide already.

However, the price does include changing rooms, a locker, and some drinking water as well as the guide.

If you don’t have a dry bag, we’d strongly recommend that you use the locker for anything that is remotely perishable in water – you will be wading through chest-high water to get to the Hidden Canyon Beji Guwang and it’s very hard to keep anything dry.

  • Anapuri Villas – this is an amazing 5-star villa complex that is very popular with wedding parties and the like. If you’re looking for a place that looks like it’s out of a fairytale, this is it. It’s not cheap but it’s very good value for Bali given the level of luxury you can expect here.

  • Bumi Linggah Villas Bali – a great 4-star villa complex where you can enjoy recovering from your adventure among the rocks of the Balinese countryside. However, this is not the best-maintained complex in the world and the low prices do reflect that.

  • Adi’s Coliving – a relatively new place that is good value for money and ideal as a base while you explore the local area. There aren’t many photos of the place online but it has a nice pool area and is popular with the digital nomad community.

  • The Swaha Hotel – a comfortable, clean and homely 3-star resort with around a dozen rooms to choose from. It’s owned and run by a local family and the pool area and the breakfast are excellent. It’s also very close to a local waterfall.

  • The Cakra Hotel – we were very impressed with this cheap four star hotel and it has very comfortable rooms and an excellent breakfast buffet. The pool is huge and ideal for a family to play in after a day of tackling the challenge of getting to the canyon.

If you explore the local area near the canyon, you’ll find some excellent places to eat on your trip to Beji Guwang, including:

  • De Guling Bali – a very cheap Babi Guling restaurant that serves a reasonably generous slab of pork on each plate and the skin is super crispy and delicious. At just 22,000 IDR a plate, you can always go back for more if you’re not full after the first plate.

  • Warung Mek Resi – this hidden gem is the closest place to the canyon and it’s our favourite stop when visiting the area. If you love great Balinese food then this is going to be your favourite too. Try the Rujak Kuah Pindang, it’s world-class.

  • Kulidan Kitchen & Space – a beautiful location that is ideal after a journey through the canyon. It’s popular with the locals too. It offers a decent selection of local and international dishes and it’s super cheap. Try the crispy chicken burger, it’s delicious.

  • Warung Pan Dodol – there’s plenty of room in this popular warung and that’s a good thing because otherwise you’d have no hope of getting a table as the Balinese menu here is amazing. It’s very reasonably priced and the food is truly tasty.

  • Plek Ganas 87 – we loved the lawar plek at this excellent local warung and the prices certainly won’t send you to the poor house. The combination of fried pork, satay and green peppers might see you going back again and again. It’s so moreish.
