It’s true that you once had to pay a small fee to leave Bali but is there really tax on departure in 2024 and if not, what do you need to pay to the Bali government during your holiday?
Our guide to the departure tax here in Bali will help you understand your responsibilities as a visitor to this beautiful place.
Is There Still A Departure Tax In Bali?
No. There is no departure tax for Indonesia or Bali. Any fees regarding the airport are incorporated in the costs of your tickets. You will not be asked to make any payment as you leave the country.
Travelers who have overstayed their visas are an exception to this rule and will need to pay a fine at the airport to leave. Failure to cover the fine can lead to arrest and detention until it’s paid.
What Fees Do International Visitors Need To Pay?
There are two main costs for travelers to Bali and they are both paid as you enter Bali or before you arrive.
The Bali Tourism Tax/Bali Tourist Tax
The acting governor of Bali introduced a new tourist tax this year. All tourists whether domestic or international arrivals must pay a fee of 100,000 IDR (that’s about $6 USD or $10 AUD).
This can be paid online at the Love Bali Website or at the payment counters in the international terminal (they are still installing payment counters at the domestic terminal).
Once you have paid you will be issued with a QR code that can be used to demonstrate that you’ve paid and the QR code is valid for a period of 6 months.
Non-tourist visas such as student visa holders, KITAP holders, KITAS holders and Balinese citizens are exempt from the tourism tax.
This tax also covers entry to the Nusa Islands of Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan.
The Visa Fee
In addition to the Bali tourist tax, most people who come to Bali as tourists will need to buy either an e-visa online or a visa on arrival.
This visa costs 500,000 IDR (that’s $35 USD or $50 AUD) and is non-negotiable. There was a period before the pandemic when this fee was being waived, and there is talk of it being waived again in the future.
But for now, if you want your visa issued, you will need to cover the cost of a visa.
FAQs
Do You Pay A Departure Tax Leaving Bali?
No. There is no need to pay a tax when departing Bali or, indeed, any other part of the Indonesian archipelago.
The Indonesian government rolled this tax into the cost of tickets many years ago and as long as you arrive at Bali airport with a visa that is in date, you will not be charged a fee to leave the island.
However, official visa holders who have overstayed their visa will have to pay a fee at Denpasar International Airport to cover their period of overstay.
Is There An Arrival Tax In Bali?
Yes, international visitors and local tourists are expected to pay the new tourism tax when entering Bali. This is a fee levied by the Bali government on any tourist entering Bali.
This new tourist tax amounts to 100,000 IDR per person (that’s about $6 USD or $10 AUD) and it’s meant to assist with sustainable tourism with the money raised being used by the Balinese government to preserve the natural environment of Bali province.
The small tax is meant to be used by local communities using local wisdom to improve infrastructure and other things for tourists and the local people on the island.
What Is The Airport Tax In Bali 2024?
There is an airport tax and it shouldn’t be confused with the new Bali tourist tax 2024. However, this tax is not something that you need to pay directly.
It’s included in the price of your tickets when you fly into or out of Bali.
Do We Need To Pay The Tourist Tax In Bali?
Yes. This one-time fee to enter Bali is officially mandatory and you can either make payment online before you come or visit the payment counters at the airport (near international arrivals) if you haven’t paid online on the Love Bali Website.
If you don’t pay the tourism levy and are stopped at a checkpoint in Bali for international tourists (these are often based at the major tourist attractions), you will be made to pay the tourist levy on the spot to the Bali provincial government.
Do You Have To Pay To Get Out Of Bali?
Foreign tourists do not need to pay to leave Bali. As long as visa holders hold a valid and up-to-date visa when they leave the country, there are no fees to be paid.
If your visa has expired, you will be expected to pay a fine for overstaying your visa. This fine depends on the length of time you have overstayed.
Failure to pay the fine will result in your detention at the airport until the fine is paid. You can ask a relative or friend to make a bank transfer if you cannot pay yourself.
What Is The Exit Tax In Indonesia?
There is no exit tax in Indonesia and you will not be expected to make any payment when leaving the country.

Final Thoughts On The Bali Tourist Tax
You won’t be required to pay a tax on departure from Bali, however, everyone must either on arrival or before arrival pay their visa fee and the Bali tourist tax.
The Bali tourist tax revenue goes to the Balinese government to be used on projects within Bali and the visa revenue helps to maintain immigration services at Bali airport and elsewhere in Indonesia.
