Our Favourite Day Trips From Uluwatu

1. Full Uluwatu One-Day Tour

Uluwatu bay, Bali, Indonesia

Before you head away from Uluwatu, make sure to explore all the secluded beaches and attractions in the area.

Of course, Uluwatu is the surfing paradise, but this area isn’t just for surfers and beach bums. You should start the day with a surf session or beach hopping. Our favourite beaches are Suluban Beach, Padang Padang Beach, Nyang Nyang, and Melasti Beach.

When hungry, head to Jimbaran fish market for a freshly caught and grilled lunch. You can shop for octopus, prawns, crab, and fish, and it will be cooked right in front of you.

You should check out 2 iconic locations with amazing views: GWK (Garuda Wisnu Kencana Park) and Uluwatu Temple, where you can enjoy watching a traditional Kecak dance performance around 4.30-6 PM.

2. Canggu Day Trip – Shopping & Nightlife

FINNS Beach Club Canggu Drone Night

Canggu is one of the most popular touristy areas in Bali and is famous for beachfront parties, some of the best cafes in Bali, shopping, and beginner-friendly surfing.

You can spend the day just at FINNS Beach Club, making new friends and party day and night, around Batu Bolong shopping and eating out, or find time to check out the 11th-century temple just outside Canggu called Tanah Lot.

It is a beautiful water temple built on a volcanic rock formation separated from the shore during high tides. The place is very scenic and will be great for photos, and the craft market next to it has super cheap souvenirs.

3. East Bali Day Trips

One day is not enough to explore the whole Eastern coast of Bali, but everyone starts somewhere!

If you only have one day, we highly recommend booking a private day tour to avoid crowds and waiting for others.

Places you can’t miss are Amed for snorkelling and diving, Tirta Ganga or Taman Ujung water palaces (both are stunning, but in one day you’ll likely have time to visit only one), quick stop at the Bat Cave (Goa Lawah Temple).

If you have more time, say two or three days, you can really explore East Bali.

Its temples, with Mother Temple (Besakih) being the crucial Hindu temple in Bali, Haven’s Gate for an iconic photo with Mt Agung as a backdrop and traditional villages like Tenganan Pegringsingan.

You will have time to learn more about history at Karangasem and Klungkung palace, and join Balinese cooking classes at Bali Asli Restaurant.

4. Ubud Day Trip

b62dece3 6d8d 48db a3a7 aa3f80933af7 ubud skip the line monkey forest sanctuary ticket and guided tour xlarge

Ubud is one of our favourite areas to stay in Bali, and you can easily spend weeks here. It is perfect to relax, try yoga, eat vegan food, and explore the artistic side of Bali thanks to a dozen art galleries and stalls selling crafts.

A highlight of a one-day trip to Ubud will definitely be its mystical Monkey Forest with multiple families of wild monkeys.

We feel like Ubud is especially cool for solo travelers and anyone who wants to slow down.

If you have time, head to Tirta Empul temple just outside Ubud for a special water purification ritual called Melasti.

5. Munduk Waterfalls

Munduk is the perfect destination to chase Bali’s best waterfalls, but as it is quite far from Uluwatu, if you only have one day, you should pick just a few to have enough time to get back.

There are many amazing viewpoints to take photos, too, like the Twin Lakes viewpoint, Bali Handara Gates, and Wanagiri Hidden Hills.

Our favourite waterfalls are Banyumala Waterfall, towering Twin Waterfalls, GitGit, and Bali’s largest one – Sekumpul.

6. Gianyar Day Trip: Waterfalls & Culture

Gianyar regency, where Ubud is, is super green and one of the culturally richest areas in Bali.

If you don’t want to go all the way to Munduk, you can enjoy waterfalls here, too. The most popular one is cascading Kanto Lampo, but you should also visit Tibumana waterfall, Suwat, Taman Sari, and Goa Rang Reng waterfalls.

It is also home to one of the oldest temples in Bali – Goa Gajah, best known for the cave and stone carvings.

If you love museums, visit Setia Darma House of Masks and Puppets – a true journey through the traditions, religion, and culture of Bali, or the Archeological Museum.

7. ATV Adventures

Whether it is riding through the Ubud tunnel, jungles in Tabanan, or beaches along the West Coast, ATVs are always a fun activity for the whole family.

You can either combine it with a day trip from Uluwatu to Ubud, East Bali or Canggu, or book the experience directly with one of the agencies in Uluwatu or Nusa Dua (simply search ATV on Google maps).

8. West Bali National Park (Taman Nasional Bali Barat)

unnamed (98)

Taman Nasional Bali Barat is the only wildlife national park in Bali – home to the rarest animals, birds, and plants.

Park fees cost just about 200,000 IDR (20 AUD) plus a tour guide. Here, you can see Javan Rusa deer, monkeys (different from the ones in Monkey Forest), and Bali Myna birds.

The area around the park is peaceful and beautiful, too. Calm and clear waters of the Northern Coast are ideal for snorkelling, swimming, and kayaking, and some waterfront resorts have hot springs.

9. Sangeh Monkey Forest

unnamed (99)

To avoid crowds, animal lovers often skip Ubud Monkey Forest and go to Sangeh.

The forest surrounds an old Hindu temple. Once we visited during a ceremony, the scene with Balinese Hindu music, prayers, towering trees, squirrels and monkeys jumping around was surreal and magical, like we were transported back in time.

Entrance fees are also cheaper than in Ubud and include water for you and nuts for monkeys.

10. Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

This UNESCO World Heritage site is the best place to see rice terraces that stretch to the horizon.

There are several trekking routes set up that you can walk, jog, or cycle, and it can take from under an hour to a few hours. Along the trails, you can buy organic rice, snacks, and vanilla beans at a very reasonable price.

You can also enjoy a local lunch at one of the restaurants with views.

If you miss greenery in Uluwatu, you can head to Sidemen. This countryside area with Mt Agung volcano as a backdrop is a perfect escape for couples.

Here, you can cycle, go for walks, soak in a natural pool in a secret waterfall, join a silver jewellery making class, or simply relax at one of the resorts with luxurious spa treatments and delicious Indonesian food for dinner.

12. Klungkung (Semarapura)

Anyone who loves history should visit Klungkung – the city of Semarapura. Crucial in Balinese history, this area has a beautiful royal palace and a historic monument to visit.

The 18th-century Klungkung Palace compound still has traditional paintings preserved on the wall of one of the pavilions.

On the other side of the road, the Puputan Klungkung monument is a memorial for all the royal family members who died here during the Dutch colonial wars in a mass suicide ritual.

Another amazing attraction in Klungkung is Museum Nyoman Gunarsa, an old art gallery with traditional paintings, wood carving, and puppets.

This area also has lots of local food and one of the locals’ favourite “waterfalls” – Tirai Air Terjun Tukad Unda, which is really just a dam.

13. White Water Rafting

Bali rivers like Ayung and Telaga Waja are best for beginners and experienced rafters, and there are multiple options to get in a boat, all fairly priced.

If you’re into the outdoors, we highly recommend picking a tour that also includes canyoning – it is incredibly fun! Some tours like that can even take on older kids.

A rafting experience is usually about 2-3 hours, plus commute from and back to Uluwatu, so it can pretty much be a whole-day trip.

14. Waterbom Water Park

Just 40 minutes from Uluwatu, near the international airport, you can find Southeast Asia’s best water park – Waterbom.

If you’re travelling with kids, this place is a must, and everyone will have fun since they have slides and rides for all ages (and heights).

You should definitely book a cabana through their website to have a comfortable day at the park with some shade and lounge space.

15. Sunset Cruises From Jimbaran Bay or Benoa

The best island and ocean views are from a boat! There are a few operators doing sunset cruises in Bali, and the closest to Uluwatu are in Jimbaran Bay.

A boat will take you around the coast all the way to see the Uluwatu cliffs from a different perspective, plus sometimes locals will try and teach you how to fish.

More elevated cruises with a dinner and live music on a full-scale pirate boat happen in Benoa, and such an experience will be perfect for a romantic night.

16. Mount Batur Sunrise Hike

Avid hikers should add to their bucket list sunrise hike in Bali, hands down! Even though this activity starts super early in the morning, like 2 AM, the views from the top of the mountain and the taste of the breakfast with such views are once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

If you’re not willing to walk 1,717 meters above sea level, book a Jeep tour – there are plenty of options on GetYourGuide or similar platforms.

Make sure to tell them that you’re staying in Uluwatu. It may mean you’ll have to get up even earlier or not sleep at all.

17. Bali Safari & Marine Park

Mara River Safari Lodge

Your kids will be absolutely ecstatic about this place.

It is more than a zoo; you can really hop on a safari ride, dine with lions or orangutans next to you, visit the largest Bali aquarium, or watch a live performance show at the Varuna theatre.

Easy to spend a whole day here, exploring all the areas. If you wish to stay, there is even a resort within the safari.

18. Kintamani: Coffee & Volcano Views

If you love long scenic bike trips, head straight to Kintamani. The landscape and climate here are the best on the island for coffee, so make sure to have a cup at one of the cafes perched around the rim of the volcano valley.

Next to the volcano, there is also a lake, where you can take a boat ride to a very controversial spot – Kuburan Terunyan. This is an open cemetery of one of the tribes that bury the people…above ground, following what’s called “wind burial” ritual.

There are also a few hiking trails in the area, with Mt Abang being one of the most underrated, yet a bit challenging.

19. Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, Bedugul

This water temple from a 50,000 IDR banknote is one of the most stunning temples in Bali, located right on the Beratan lake, often covered in fog or on a clear day, framed by green northern hills.

The park at the temple is a great place to spend time with kids, plus you can also get a ride around the lake!

Where Is It? Danau Beratan, Candikuning, Baturiti, Tabanan Regency, Bali 82191, Indonesia

20. Celuk & Sukawati Villages

For artsy souls, visiting the Sukawati Art market and Celuk village will be an amazing half-day trip.

This area has generations of some of the best silversmiths, amazing arts and leather crafts, and less touristy vibes.

Apart from this, Bali Bird Park, a little zoo, the Kemenuh butterfly park, and some volcanic black sand beaches are in the area.

21. Tabanan: Culture & History

Tabanan regency is a big area stretching from the beaches inland with lots of greenery, Balinese culture, and secluded eco resorts like De Moksha or Uluman, where you can have lunch.

There are a few more things to do in Tabanan in one day:

  • Tanah Lot Temple
  • a chocolate-making workshop you can only book through Airbnb in the area (Primo Chocolab),
  • Alas Kedaton Temple with wild monkeys,
  • one of the best butterfly parks in Bali to visit – Bali Butterfly Park Tabanan with a little insect museum,
  • Tabanan Anom Palace for a 2-hour dive into Bali’s history and culture.

22. Lovina: Dolphin Watching Day Trip

Lovina Dolphin Watching

The only place in Bali to swim side by side with dolphins is around Lovina, up in the North of Bali.

The best time to come here for a dolphinwatching tour is during the dry season (end of April to October), but we suggest picking the shoulder season to avoid crowds (May, October).

You will sail out around sunrise and very soon meet dolphin families that you’ll observe from a safe distance.

23. Nusa Penida Trip

Cheerful woman on stairs against ocean and mountain

The usual way to explore Nusa Penida is to get on a fast boat from Sanur port and then rent a bike in Penida to ride around.

But if you only have 1 day, it is best to pre-book a day trip to make sure all the transport is taken care of. If you can afford it (about 100 USD/150 AUD), go with a small private boat, as “public” boats are often not on time.

In Nusa Penida, must-sees are Kelingking beach (famous T-Rex shaped cliffs), Angel’s billabong and Broken beach location with a unique natural pool and beach, Atuh and Diamond Beach, Manta Point and Crystal Bay for diving.

24. Helicopter Tours

Olymp Helipad and Fly Bali are the two main operators offering transfers and helicopter tours around Bali.

From Uluwatu, you can fly over the whole Bukit Peninsula, around the South coast, or even all the way to the volcanoes, and even the Nusa Penida islands!

Tips To Organise Day Trips From Uluwatu

  • Uluwatu is quite a ride from most attractions as it is located on the southernmost tip of the Bukit Peninsula. The private car will be more comfortable, but will also get stuck in traffic more.
  • Often, hotels can help you rent a bike/car, and even offer some private tours.
  • Don’t plan on walking a long distance. Very few areas in Bali are walkable.
  • Always bring sunscreen and grab a sarong with you.
  • Pretty much all beaches in the South have parking fees, and most attractions (waterfalls, temples, parks) will have entrance fees that are to be paid in cash unless you booked a group tour with all fees included.
