Yeh Gangga Beach: A Lesser Known Sunset Beach

Yeh Gangga Beach, or Pantai Yeh Gangga as it’s known locally, is not a name often mentioned when talking about beaches in Bali. We think this small but beautiful black sands beach is well worth checking out while you’re in Bali.

This hidden gem is far enough away from the crowds of Kuta Bali to keep it serene and peaceful, but not too far to make it a big effort to reach.

It’s about a 30 to 40-minute drive north along the coast from Canggu, traffic depending of course, and about 20 minutes from Tanah Lot Temple, which is handy should you wish to make a day trip.

How To Get To Yeh Gangga Beach

There are several ways to get to Yeh Gangga Beach, depending on your plans for the day:

  • Taxi – If you plan to stay at the beach for a few hours, then a taxi app like Grab or Gojek is the easiest way. The journey from Canggu is around 40 minutes, and when you’re there you can stay for as long as you like. If you’re travelling with friends or a partner you can split the cost, if you’re alone you may meet people at the beach to rideshare home with.

  • Private Car & Driver – If you’re planning to stay out for a whole day or two, we recommend hiring a private car and driver. This way, you can spend as much time as you want at the beach without worrying about getting home. You could also make a day trip, visiting several locations. If you’re not sure of other cool locations to visit, ask your driver or hotel to help you plan an adventure.

  • Motorbike/Scooter Hire – Many visitors to Bali are tempted to hire a bike for the thrill of riding and the freedom to explore. Here at FINNS, we will never recommend riding a bike, you’re unlikely to be road-legal causing problems with the police, and Bali’s roads can be tough, having an accident can cause serious injury as well as financial issues. You’re there to enjoy yourself, so pay someone to do the driving for you!

For chilling at the beach, the best times of day to visit are the morning and afternoon, it’s a bit cooler at those times, avoiding the midday sun. Of course, if you’re a sun worshipper then all times of the day are great!

Being a west-facing beach, there are some fantastic sunsets to be seen and therefore the afternoon would be the best time to visit. For surfing, the wet season from October to February has the right conditions.

Is There An Entrance Fee For Yeh Gangga Beach

No, like most beaches in Bali, there’s no entrance fee for Pantai Yeh Gangga, and the parking is free so if you have a driver waiting then that’s something less to worry about.

What To Expect At Yeh Gangga Beach

This relatively small beach may be away from the tourist crowds, but it’s very popular with the local residents, especially over the weekend when it can be fairly busy. Some new life has been breathed into it recently with several warungs opening on the beach, some have loungers on the beach and we love to kick back here and listen to the waves crashing on the shoreline.

The beach itself is made up of black volcanic sand, which is pleasant to walk on with bare feet, but look out for sharp rocks. If swimming or surfing, we recommend water shoes to protect your feet.

The most notable attraction right on the shoreline is a big rock with a hole in it, locals call this Karang Bolong, and it’s a great spot for that sunset photo you’ve been looking for. On the top of this rock is a small temple, Pura Batu Balong. Being a religious site remember to dress appropriately if climbing the rock.

Where To Stay Near Yeh Gangga Beach

As with most of Bali, there is no shortage of hotels in and around Pantai Yeh Gangga. If you’re looking to explore the area more or just want to spend a couple of days at the beach, then here are some nearby hotels we recommend.

  • Shanti Boutique Retreat – an absolutely beautiful hotel, we could’ve stayed here for days. They call it a retreat because it’s a great place to escape from the outside world. The rooms are big and very comfortable, there are lush gardens to walk around, a small pool and there are workshops such as yoga to get involved with. The retreat prices are in the mid to high range.

  • Jero Harum Homestay – a small hotel just off the beach, the rooms here have everything you need including air conditioning and a hot shower. The staff here are lovely, and the price is within the budget range.

  • WakkaGangga – this high-end resort is a little north of the main beach. Set in beautiful, lush gardens, there’s a large pool with a view of the sea. The rooms are of a traditional Balinese style, with thatched roofs. There’s spa treatment available here also, great for a romantic getaway.

Where To Eat Near Yeh Gangga Beach

There are plenty of restaurants to eat in either on the beach or just a short walk away, here are a few that we enjoy eating in:

  • Cliffhanger Bali Restaurant – this trendy restaurant, beach bar and grill is right on the beach, another great spot for that sunset view. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available here, and we love the happy hour cocktails and their amazing selection of schnitzels. It is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly.

  • BFC Duo Yeh Gangga – Best Fried Chicken may not be the first place that springs to mind when looking to dine, but it never disappoints. It’s about a 15-minute walk to get here from the beach.

  • Warung Alit – a local-style restaurant on the same street as BFC, is a great restaurant if you want to experience cheap and authentic Balinese food.

There’s plenty to see and do nearby, here are a few things we liked:

  • Tanah Lot – this iconic sea temple is just south of Yeh Gangga it is arguably one of Bali’s most famous temples. If you haven’t been already then we’d recommend stopping there on the way to or from Yeh Gangga Beach. Be warned it can be quite busy, and parking is sometimes difficult. The entrance fee for adults is 75k IDR (approx. $5 US / $7 AUS)

  • MEXX Cooking School – a great cooking school inside the main town where you can learn how to cook local food. They take you shopping to the market too which was fun. A really enjoyable experience and we made a few friends there.

  • Grojogan Twin Waterfall – one of Bali’s lesser-known waterfalls, this isn’t far from the beach and the parking is easy. Beautiful to look at, and a great place to rinse that salty seawater from your body.
