Our Favourite Ubud Warungs & Cafes To Find Cheap Food

Sekar Sari Kitchen

unnamed (62)

A fantastic spot with Indonesian food. Think creamy and spicy yellow curry, seafood laksa, and pisang goreng (fried bananas) for dessert.

You’ll find plenty of vegetarian dishes a la carte, too. When dining at a local warung, always go with fresh juices – they are delicious and healthy.

Mama’s warung is loved by both locals and foreigners. The family makes traditional food and serves lots of fruit juices and fresh fruit on the side.

Our go-to here is fried noodles (mie goreng) and sweet Balinese pancakes with coconut (dadar gulung).

Warung Garasi

unnamed (64)

An incredibly cozy and simple local eatery connected to a guest house with great food and super-friendly owners.

Food-wise, you won’t go wrong with fried rice (nasi goreng), corn fritters, and bakso (meatball soup). But honestly, everything tasted amazing and is incredibly cheap (like 2-3 AUD per plate).

A bonus if you visit – the owner’s private collection of Vespa motorcycles, hence the name “garasi” which literally means garage!

Sun Sun Warung

One of the most popular cheap eats in Ubud, Sun Sun Warung is right in the central Ubud, on the main street (Raya Ubud), steps away from the Ubud palace and the big market.

Located within the real Balinese house, this kitchen serves both Balinese and Indonesian dishes like nasi goreng (fried rice), crispy duck (bebek goreng), grilled chicken with waterspinach, and more – all with no added MSG.

Vegetarian options are readily available, too, and even a few vegan dishes.

Warung Makan Bahagia Nasi Campur

To experience a traditional buffet-style restaurant, you have to try nasi campur (mixed rice).

You simply pay for a “package”: steamed rice, protein (meat or vegetarian like jackfruit), sate lilit (skewer with minced meat), and it comes with a condiment, boiled egg, and a veggie side. Chicken is always so tender!

The whole plate will be more than enough for lunch or dinner and is only 30,000 IDR (3 AUD).

Your culinary adventure won’t be complete without trying suckling pig – Balinese Babi Guling. And the best warung to do so is Dek Cing.

They only specialise in roasting pork. Granted, the process takes a lot of time, and you order a plate with some fall-apart meat, some crispy skin, and rice, of course.

As always, the portions will be huge and also come with some vegetables and some sausages.

This traditional warung is a hidden gem of Ubud. It has a great selection of dishes for 20,000 to 55,000 IDR (2-5 AUD), from appetisers to a tasting plate with traditional Balinese dishes called Rijsttafel.

We highly recommend ordering the Rijsttafel. The presentation is beautiful and you get small samples of diverse food in one dish – a perfect introduction to Balinese cooking.

If not, the menu has plenty of goodness for you: chicken satay (skewers), different curries, dishes with fish or seafood, and even a few vegetarian options.

An upscale warung in Ubud, right around the corner from the main road. They cook all the popular local dishes and some Asian and Western food, too, but mostly breakfast menu and snacks like potato chips or gyoza.

We’d say mie goreng (fried noodles) and pork ribs are the best choices here, but we also love classic chicken satay with peanut sauce.

Warung Citta Ovest Pizza & Pasta

unnamed (70)

Craving something more familiar? This warung in Ubud excels at comfort food, how Europeans see it: rich pasta and cheesy pizza.

Carbonara for 5 AUD is a winner here, but honestly, everything was incredibly yummy and cheap. It is a small place and can guarantee an amazing time even for couples on a date!

We won’t say these pizzas are Italian-style, but they are delicious and that’s all that matters!

The family also has a little mandala art exhibition within the compound; you can ask them to show it to you.

A cozy hang-out place in the centre to get pretty much any food – from smoothie bowls for breakfast to Indonesian food for dinner.

We recommend sitting down in the garden within the Balinese house – it adds to the atmosphere. Regarding food, you can’t go wrong.

They also offer a kids’ menu and a few international classic dishes like pasta or burgers, so nobody will go hungry!

The place is great during the day as you can enjoy the rice fields’ views, but at night, it is also a go-to spot for cheap (and delicious) cocktails.

Small, cheap eats place on the side of the road with lots of delicious food!

Vegetarians will be happy with jackfruit rendang, veggie soups, and fried tofu and tempeh dishes, and meat eaters can enjoy chicken or fish fried rice and noodles. They don’t use palm oil to cook, only coconut oil.

Some dishes are a bit of a fusion between local and Western food, but everything is still tasty and cheap.

On the downside, it is one of the rarer warungs that do not include taxes in the prices, so be ready to pay an extra 15% or so.

Iconic cheap eats surrounded by the fantastic rice fields of the Sweet Orange Trail, hence the name. A perfect stop to refuel, especially considering that they make some of the best food in Ubud.

As many people walk earlier in the morning, they have three great breakfast sets for about 10AUD, including fresh fruit, fruit juice, and a sweet or savoury dish like pancakes, nasi goreng fried rice or eggs.

unnamed (80)

The best warung in Ubud to get BBQ pork ribs, hands down! But they don’t just make plain ribs, they have a selection of different sauces to go with a whole rack of ribs, from classic sambal matah to curry-based sauces!

Be prepared for the kick: most of the sauces are rather spicy.

The best part? Prices are insanely cheap: the full rack you can share will be about 298,000 IDR (under 30 AUD).

Warung Makan Bu Rus

unnamed (81)

We love this place for the setting and atmosphere of the traditional Balinese family compound, where you can enjoy your home-cooked meal in their garden. The husband and wife have been serving food since 2014 and are still one of the best warungs in Ubud.

Apart from staple Indonesian dishes, you will find here Balinese must-try – crispy duck (half of the duck!), aka bebek goreng. As usual, it comes with all the sides and rice.

Vegetarians should definitely try moringa curry – moringa is a big powerhouse of health benefits, and locals absolutely love it.

A vegetarian cafe with a very unique concept. It works like a self-service buffet, but there is also no one to collect money or wash your dishes. You simply leave your payment in a donation jar/box, wash your plate, and that’s it!

You can savour your food in a quiet garden. A great spot for lunch, and you can try as many sides as you want at once.

If you’re visiting the Tegallalang rice terraces, Labak Sari is a great spot to eat on a budget but with a nice view!

They serve a bit of everything from croissants and French toast to pasta, including local food, of course.

While the menu is mostly cheap (4 to 7 AUD), especially if you order Indonesian food, some items are pricy, like barramundi or grilled prawns (they are about 130,000 IDR or 13 AUD)

A lesser-known cheap restaurant in Ubud that doubles as a cooking class with Ibu Ayu.

Our top picks are chicken lada hitam (chicken cooked with black pepper sauce) with a side of corn fritters.
