One of the top yoga retreats in Ubud is a 7-day program at FireFly. Every day you practice at yoga shala and also get introduced to Balinese culture, and food, and make connections with like-minded people. Yoga retreats are just as good as wellness programs, so why not combine vacation with some healing?

The shared room option is very affordable, but you can always get a private room for an extra charge.

Intuitive Flow Studio in Penestanan is a great spot for beginners to learn the basic yoga postures during Hatha yoga classes, explore flow sequences, restorative yoga, and sound vibrations, or relax with the evening yoga nidra session.

The best time for yoga practice here is in the afternoon when the gentle breeze goes through the open-air yoga shala. A unique class worth visiting is Yoga Pranala taught by the owner of the studio. It incorporates Balinese Qi Gong traditions ( a mix of martial arts, breathing, and meditation).

A centre for true yoga fans, specifically of Ashtanga yoga practice. The studio only teaches Ashtanga Mysore classes which are a deep combination of yoga, Buddhist meditation, and philosophy and are considered rather challenging for complete beginners.

There are not many studios in Bali dedicated to this traditional yoga style, which makes this studio so special and loved by experienced yogis.

A nice bonus – there is a raw vegan cafe below the yoga shala.

Ashram Munivara

The cheapest yoga class you can find in Ubud is at Ashram Munivara – just 50,000 IDR (5 AUD) every Monday and Wednesday. But it is not at the top of our list because it is quite far from the Ubud centre and the classes can be cancelled if not enough people sign up.

The ashram is open for you to stay and practice as long as you wish. The yoga classes are a combo of Surya Namaskar, Kundalini Tantra Yoga and some other postures and techniques.

Insider Tips To Make The Most Out Of Yoga Classes In Ubud

Indonesia, Bali, woman practising yoga at the coast at twilight
  • You don’t have to bring a yoga mat, most of the studios provide yoga mats for the students (they are regularly cleaned), but, of course, having your own makes the experience more comfortable.

  • Not all yoga studios offer daily classes, some only focus on teacher training programs. So when doing your research make sure to double-check if it is a school, retreat, or a studio.

  • The bigger and more popular the studio is, usually the bigger the group classes are. For ex., some top classes in Yoga Barn or Radiantly Alive get more than 30 people. Hard to get personalized attention. If you want really small classes, your best bet is to go to more remote studios or studios that are within spas or resorts, like Taksu.

  • Some hotels come with free (or cheap) yoga classes for their guests. One of the popular choices is Honeymoon Guesthouse, the more upscale ones are The Sankara Resort by Pramana, COMO Uma Ubud, or Bagus Jati.

  • If you’re looking for a very unique experience, venture outside Ubud and visit Anand Ashram. It is a real ashram with daily practice, but you can join the yoga asana class at 6:45 AM for 100,000 IDR (10 AUD). It is definitely not a studio vibe, but rather a special place with a very serious approach to meditation and yoga practice.
