Tembeling Beach and Forest is located on the southwest coast of Nusa Penida Island, Bali, in the serene Tembeling area. The area is nestled between the villages of Batununggal and the island’s western coast.
Surrounded by towering cliffs and dense jungle, the location offers a secluded and peaceful atmosphere that makes it a perfect retreat.

How To Get To Nusa Penida
First, if you’re not already there, of course, you’ll need to reach Nusa Penida, which is easily done by taking a speedboat from Sanur Beach in Bali. The boat ride takes around 30–45 minutes, with multiple departures daily. Once you arrive at Nusa Penida, you’ll need to make your way to the southwest coast.
To get to Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan, take a local boat from the Yellow Bridge connecting Lembongan and Ceningan. Boats run regularly and take about 10–15 minutes to reach Nusa Penida’s Toya Pakeh or Sampalan Harbor.
How To Get To Tembeling Beach
Reaching Tembeling Beach and Forest isn’t the easiest journey, but that’s part of its charm.
Private Driver – from the main areas of Nusa Penida, you can easily hire a driver to take you there. Bear in mind this is a day trip, and you’ll easily spend a few hours at the location.
The second parking area is as far as your driver will be able to go, but organise beforehand for them to wait for you. This is also a safe place to keep some personal belongings.
Bike/ Scooter Hire – as always, we recommend against hiring a bike or scooter. You most likely will not be road legal, and the roads on the island are very testing.
The Jungle Walk
From here, there’s a short walk through the forest. From the second parking lot to the first natural pool took us about 15 minutes.
Once you reach the first pool, you’re almost there! Follow the trail past the Tembeling natural pools and rock towers, descending towards the ocean
This short but scenic and exciting trek through the jungle adds to the experience, and it makes reaching the beach all the more rewarding.
What Is The Best Time To Visit Tembeling Beach?
The best time to visit Tembeling Beach is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. During this time of year, the weather is typically sunny and warm, making it ideal for exploring the natural pools, hiking through the forest, and enjoying the beach.
November to March is the rainy season, with frequent showers and rougher seas, which can make access to the beach and natural pools more challenging.
It’s not crowded even at the busiest times, but we visited Tembeling Beach in the morning and enjoyed the cool and calm experience.
Is There An Entrance Fee To Tembeling Beach?
Yes, there is a small fee to enter Tembeling Beach and Forest. This helps to maintain the area and any facilities there.
When we went, there was a small fee of 10k IDR per person, but this is subject to change. Bring some cash with you.

Tembeling Beach
The beach itself is small and rocky, tucked away at the bottom of huge cliffs. It’s not a typical beach for sunbathing or swimming, but it has a wild, untouched feel that adds to the magic of the area.
The waves crashing against the rock formations and the views out to the open ocean are stunning. It’s the perfect place to sit for a moment and take it all in after exploring the forest and natural pools.
Tembeling Natural Pool
Near the beach, you’ll find two natural fresh water pools, which are arguably the main attraction here. The water is cool and very refreshing to take a dip in. We went in the morning before the weather was too hot outside, and there were only a couple of people taking Instagram photos.
We say ‘natural pool’, but they have been structured slightly to accommodate visitors, making them both beautiful and accessible.
Cliff Jump
If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, there is a small ledge that you can climb up the rocks to, then jump into the pool. We gave this a go after we saw a couple of others doing it, and it was quite fun.
Just be sure to check the depth of the water you’re jumping into, be careful climbing the rocks, and don’t forget to be considerate towards other visitors who may be trying to relax.
Cave And Secret Beach
There is a little cave at the beach, which leads to a secret beach on the other side. This is well worth visiting. The secret beach had no tourists when we were there, of the few visitors to the main beach, maybe many are unaware of the secret beach.
The rocks can be slippery inside, so watch your step, and it’s a bit low at one point, so watch your head.
What To Bring To Tembeling Beach
Sturdy Footwear – bring some sturdy footwear for the walk through Tembeling Forest, as well as through the cave and the rocks around the pools. The ground can be slippery, uneven, and steep in places, and you don’t want to step on a bug with uncovered feet! We brought flip-flops in our bags to wear on the beach itself.
Drinking Water – bring plenty of drinking water! It can get very hot, and with the walk, your body can dehydrate easily, and there is nowhere to buy water.
Small Money – bring some small money for the entrance fee, and on the off chance there’s a local selling drinks and snacks at the beach or in the parking area.
Swimwear/ Change Of Clothes – you should probably bring some swimwear if you’re planning to get into the sea and/or the natural pool, and a towel to dry off with. Consider a change of clothes in case you get wet.
Snacks – don’t be hungry, bring snacks! We completely forgot about this, and we were starving at the beach!
Supplies – you may want to bring some sun cream and a few first aid supplies like plasters. Consider bringing a battery pack for your phone, also.

While the water in the natural pools at Tembeling Beach might look beautiful and refreshing, it’s not quite a spa-grade drink! It’s nature’s own cocktail of rock, plant matter, and who knows what else.
Even if you see the locals drinking it, stick to the water you brought with you — your stomach will thank you later!
