We offer a quick introduction to gluten-free life here before looking at gluten-free supermarkets and bakeries before introducing you to the 20 best gluten-free restaurants on the island.

Things To Know About Gluten-Free Products In Bali

Assortment of pieces of cake

Gluten-free cakes, gluten-free snacks, gluten-free pizzas, gluten-free pancakes, gluten-free pasta, gluten-free cones, etc. can all be found in Bali.

Unfortunately, eating a gluten-free diet is not always simple and while you may find gluten-free options marked on a menu, you can’t always guarantee that there will be a gluten-free version of the food you want when you want it.

If you need gluten-free dishes here on the island, it’s best to plan in advance rather than cross your fingers and hope for a gluten-free menu when you arrive.

You can find plenty of gluten-free options in supermarkets in Bali. Chains like Frestive and Pepito carry gluten-free products and when you need gluten-free snacks or gluten-free food in Bali, they are often a very easy way to find what you need.

However, we need to stress that although they carry gluten-free food, that doesn’t mean that the supermarket staff are trained on gluten-free options.

That means you will need to assess the gluten-free choices available to you and then buy the products you feel are necessary, if you’re not sure that something’s fully gluten-free, it’s best to Google or to leave it.

Where To Find Gluten-Free Bread In Bali

Many of the island’s more upmarket bakers produce a gluten-free loaf or two. However, you should be aware that gluten-free sandwiches are often contaminated by the use of a butter knife that’s applied to both gluten-free and regular bread.

The 20 Best Gluten-Free Restaurants In Bali

One thing you will notice from this list is that gluten-free restaurants in Bali tend to either be upscale and upmarket or vegan/vegetarian.

That means you can’t assume that you can get gluten-free sandwiches or a gluten-free bun in most restaurants on the island.

If you need gluten-free choices, you should always use our gluten-free guide or another gluten-free travel guide to plan your way around the delicious food on the island.

You can eat safely here in Bali but you will need to be cautious about how you approach things.

We should note that not all these places are fully gluten-free, but that they will all be happy to create some gluten-free dishes on request and there are gluten-free options on the menu.

FAQs

Is It Possible To Eat Gluten-Free In Bali? Does Bali Do Gluten-Free Food?

Yes, it’s possible to manage a whole range of dietary requirements in Bali including dairy-free, gluten-free, etc.

However, we should note that you’re unlikely to find a local gluten-free kitchen in a warung and many Balinese people simply won’t understand what’s in local ingredients to help you understand whether there is gluten in them or not.

There is also a high risk of cross-contamination between gluten-free items and items with gluten in cheaper/smaller restaurants, cafes, etc.

We would strongly recommend that you stick to resort restaurants if you have to be certain of a 100% gluten-free diet here on the island.

How Do You Say Gluten-Free In Bali? How Do You Ask For Gluten-Free In Indonesia?

Most Balinese people speak Bahasa Indonesia, the Indonesian language, and the term for gluten-free is “bebas gluten”.

We should note that many people simply won’t understand this phrase, however. So, don’t decide that your local warung is a gluten-free restaurant because you asked for gluten-free.

Ingredients like soy sauce are ubiquitous here and most people will have no idea that they contain gluten.

Is Bintang Gluten-Free?

No, Bintang is not gluten-free. However, there are only trace amounts of gluten in this beer and it depends on how gluten-intolerant you are as to whether you can get away with drinking it or not.

Final Thoughts On Gluten-Free Options In Bali

If you need gluten-free, Bali has what you need. However, it’s not quite as simple as strolling into your local cafe and demanding gluten-free bread.

You need to search around the island and be very specific about your needs if you want to live fully gluten-free here and often the easiest way to ensure the safety of your diet is to eat in more upmarket restaurants where staff have had the training to deliver great gluten-free meals.
