Canggu is a great area to hunt for the real local dishes, think soups, juicy pork or beef, or famous fried rice, or even their vegan versions.
It can be your very first time trying Indonesian food, or you can be an expert in street food, the warungs in Canggu won’t disappoint.
If you’re staying in the area, here are the best warungs in Canggu we love to eat at and can recommend.
Summary: Top-3 Warungs To Find The Best Local Food In Canggu
- Warung Sika is the best warung in Canggu to experience buffet-style food (nasi campur)
- For real Balinese dishes like babi guling, go to Babi Guling Men Lari
- Oma Jamu Vegan is the best warung in Canggu for vegans and vegetarians.
What Is A Warung?
Warungs are family-owned Indonesian restaurants that usually serve cheap, home-cooked meals, often in a buffet-style setting.
At the counter, you choose rice (white, brown rice or yellow rice) and then as many sides and protein (meat or vegan) as you want! Everything goes on the same plate, in small portions, and you will end up with a generous plate to fill you up.
Table service is not common, but possible in a more “upmarket” warung.
In most scenarios, you pay at the end, and it won’t be more than 40,000-50,000 IDR (4-5 AUD).
Traditional Balinese dishes and Indonesian staples you should try at a warung:
- babi guling (roasted suckling pig),
- nasi goreng (fried rice),
- soto ayam (chicken soup),
- bakso (meatball soup),
- sate ayam (chicken skewers, can also be other meats), and
- rendang (slow-cooked meat, usually beef).
- We also love sides like cap cay (stir-fried fresh veggies), kangkung (stir-fried morning glory), and fried tempe.
Our Favourite Warungs In Canggu To Eat The Best Indonesian Food
1. Warung Sika
Warung Sika is probably the most popular warung in Canggu to try nasi campur (mixed rice), fried chicken, BBQ chicken, fried noodles (Mie goreng), and local food, in general.
As it is a go-to place for many tourists and expats during lunch, it gets super busy. Go earlier or in the afternoon.
No signs on the dishes, so you just point at what you like.

6. Warung La Be’Ne
At La Be’Ne, there is a bit of everything: pasta, steak, fries, and some Indonesian dishes, too. Everything is much cheaper than at a restaurant.
The food we tried was excellent: nasi goreng (fried rice), steak, and tuna had restaurant-level presentation but came at about 10 AUD.

Even though Google ratings aren’t high, Bu Mi stays one of the best places in Canggu to try Balinese curry and other Indonesian dishes, as they rotate the menu every day!
They have a lot of vegan dishes with tofu, but the surprising highlights for us were the jackfruit curry and black beef soup (rawon).

An amazing vegan warung to enjoy meatless bakso, nasi goreng, skewers or something more Western like pasta, sandwiches or waffles.

12. Oma Jamu Vegan
The best range of vegetarian and vegan options in Canggu at a cheap price. Their vegetarian nasi campur, curries, smoothies and fresh juices are very good.
Besides that, you can find here a more familiar breakfast menu with pancakes and porridge (also vegan, of course) if you miss Western-style food.
On average, a dish is about 50,000 to 70,000 IDR (5-7 AUD). If you sit down at the back, you can still enjoy views of the rice fields.

13. Bakso Iga
The best place to try famous street food in Canggu – bakso, aka meatball soup.
You can choose between chicken meatballs or beef, but the menu is huge, and even includes some creative options like beef and mozzarella meatballs.
But, the top choice is the bakso iga – it is the same bakso, but in addition to meatballs, you get juicy beef ribs in your soup (iga means ribs in Bahasa Indonesia). A bowl is only about 38,000 IDR (under 4 AUD).

14. Babi Guling Men Lari
The signature dish at Men Lari is, as you can guess, babi guling – the star of the Balinese cuisine, a whole roasted suckling pig.
So here you can go with a classic: pork, some skin, and rice, or be more adventurous and try uratan babi (sausage made of pork intestines) or pork soup.

15. Casa Tua
If you don’t come here for food, you come for atmosphere – this spot on the Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong is one of the coziest places to dine in, but, to be fair, it looks nothing like traditional warungs – it is a nicer restaurant.
Menu highlights, in our opinion, are pepes tuna (grilled tuna with chilli), prawns or chicken wings (from the starters menu), and beef rendang.
If you like sweets, our favourite dish is dadar gulung crepes stuffed with shredded coconut and palm sugar.

17. Varuna Warung

Many expats have a love-hate relationship with this warung, but it is still one of the best local food places in Canggu, where you can get anything from corn fritters to gelato.
They expanded to some international dishes to accomodate all the palettes, so you can even get a breakfast or club sandwich here. But if you’re into local food, the nasi campur buffet is delicious at Varuna.
Prices are still super reasonable, and there are a few seats, although the place is often quite crowded.

18. Tiga Canggu
This buffet-style restaurant serves delicious Indonesian food and international fare, maintaining canteen vibes but in a cleaner and more organised way.
It has a more “expensive” look, so the prices are closer to other cafes in the area rather than local warungs, but it is a good starting point, especially if you’ve never travelled to Asia or had street food before.
They also make fusion dishes like nasi goreng (fried rice) but with salmon, or classic beef rendang, but with cheese.
This spot also has lots of sweet treats and gelato, all under 4 AUD.

19. Warung Sate Babi Pandu

Locals and tourists come here to grab the best food to get on the side of the road – skewers! They grill them fresh and have two types: very common chicken satay and harder-to-find pork skewers (sate babi).
They just serve it with peanut sauce, rice or lontong (rice cakes), and some spicy condiments like sambal matah. A generous portion of skewers and rice is just about 25,000 IDR (2.5 AUD).

20. Warung Jawa Bu Sri
A local food stop serving Javanese food in Canggu with some vegetarian options. Our local friends confirm that their food is legit!
Nasi campur, chicken and rice, and local coffee – all the traditional food you expect to find in Bali. It does come at a bit higher price, averaging about 70,000 IDR per plate (7 AUD).

FAQs
How To Avoid Bali Belly (Food Poisoning)?
Stick to warungs and restaurants that cook fresh food and avoid street carts selling food in Canggu.
Make sure to have up-to-date travel insurance and some basic medication like activated charcoal or something for diarrhea in your bag – you may not want to go to the pharmacy if you are not feeling ok.
Don’t ever drink tap water, and be careful with ice in the street stalls, as it can be made with tap water.
Make sure the food is hot or heated. Skip anything raw that has been packaged in plastic and sitting out.
If you’re not certain about traditional warungs where food sits out for the day, opt for a more upscale experience like Casa Tua or Tiga Canggu, where other travellers go – they rotate food more often and keep in mind the sensitive stomachs of newcomers.
