Seafood lovers will love Balinese abundance in freshly caught fish, prawns, octopus, clams, calamari, crabs, and huge lobsters.
Even though the main fishing area in Bali is Jimbaran, the seafood restaurants in Canggu get fresh delivery every single morning directly from the fishermen and the fish market, and talented chefs honed their cooking skills over centuries of living off the ocean.
Plus, dining in Canggu has more upscale interiors, a mix of different cuisines and cooking techniques and there are just so many things local and international chefs can do with fish and seafood rather then just grill.
Where can you eat delicious seafood while in Canggu? Here are the best seafood restaurants we love to dine at.
What Seafood Can You Eat In Bali?
To easily understand if a restaurant is serving you locally caught seafood or not, here is a brief list of fish and seafood fishing boats bring in every morning from the Indian Ocean:
Tuna, Red Snapper, and Mahi-mahi (aka dorado) – are the most common fish caught around the island. Tuna is, however, seasonal, as it is not native to Bali, and is only caught when migration happens. You can also catch groupers, amberjack, or trout, but they are rarely served in restaurants.
Barramundi is an amazing fish for grilling, but it is a bit less popular due to its supply.
Bali oysters. There are also oysters brought in from neighbouring islands – Lombok and East Java, where they are farmed.
Crabs. Crabs caught around Bali are not King crabs or Snow crabs. They are small to medium with some delicious meat.
Shrimps and prawns of all sizes! Are caught in abundance and are absolutely yummy.
Calamari from tiny to huge. Are very popular local delicacies, especially breaded and grilled calamari!
Octopus. The supply isn’t big. There are tiny baby octopuses that are very delicious as grilled snacks, and big adult octopuses that are used in casual and fine-dining seafood restaurants in Bali.
Lobster. Jimbaran, Amed, and West Bali have great lobsters. Many fishermen still use handmade traps to catch them.
Bali waters do not have salmon or cod, so they are usually imported.
The suppliers and local initiatives are still working on how to make Bali and Indonesia’s fishing industry more sustainable, if that is your concern it is best to ask the waiters about the source of your meal.
