Korean food has become very popular all over Indonesia in the last few years, including in Bali. If you’ve never tried it before, then here’s a quick rundown of what to expect:

Korean Cuisine is based mostly on rice, vegetables, seafood and meat, with a distinct balance of flavours. Kimchi, sesame oil, garlic, soy sauce and ginger are common ingredients. The food can be spicy, but not always.

If you enjoy a drink and you’re thirsty for the taste of Korea, then no meal is complete without their most famous drink, Soju. A clear spirit made from rice or grain, often with fruit flavours added, any Korean restaurant on the island, around the world in fact, is usually well-stocked

Also popular is Korean BBQ, where guests grill their own marinated meats at the table. It’s always fun to watch your food sizzle away on the table in front of you.

Here we’ve listed what we think is some of the best Korean cuisine on the island, please note that this list is not ranked and we think that every Korean restaurant we’ve listed is a must-visit!

Yeobi Hansik – Seminyak

We start our list with one of the most popular and best-rated Korean restaurants in Bali, Yeobi Hansik.

This is our favourite restaurant for gimbap, a dish of seasoned rice and other fillings rolled in seaweed, it looks a bit like sushi but has a distinct flavour! Try the bulgogi gimbap!

K-bunsik Bali Korean restaurant – Kuta

Located in the heart of Kuta, this is the restaurant to go to if you’re craving real Korean fried chicken. We think this place has the best Korean fried chicken in Bali, which is quite a statement!

Try the jjajangmyeon, Korean noodles in a black bean sauce, and the cheese gimbap!

Korea Town – Umalas

This is another restaurant with great Korean fried chicken, but if you want something a bit different then try the spicy tteokbokki, a hot and spicy rice cake.

Be careful though as it really is spicy…but nothing a cold beer won’t fix!

Hwamoon – Seminyak

The staff at this restaurant are really friendly and helpful, they know a lot about the food being served. One employee in particular speaks great Korean, which is interesting to hear when they’re serving Korean guests.

We liked the tangsuyuk, a sweet and sour crispy pork.

The Little Korean Kitchen – Munggu

We love the atmosphere here, located in Manggu, just inland from Canggu, the restaurant overlooks beautiful rice paddy fields, so it’s a great place to eat during the daytime, even for breakfast.

The sundubu jjigae, a spicy tofu stew, is delicious and real soul food to eat looking out to the rice fields on those rainy days.

Seoul Soul Project – Canggu

This place does a really amazing kimchi fried rice, and sujeonggwa, a traditional Korean cinnamon punch which is great to drink after your meal.

This is more than just a restaurant though, they serve some fantastic cocktails, and if you’re feeling in a soulful mood after a few cocktails then there’s even a karaoke room upstairs!

Satu Mangkok – Ubud

Satu Mongkok means “one bowl” in Korean, and it defines the type of food served here, bowls of authentic Korean cuisine.

It’s the only restaurant in Ubud on the list, and if you’re there then we definitely recommend checking this place out. Try the jjamppong, a spicy Korean noodle soup, wich is possibly the best in Bali.

Koki Restaurant – Nusa Dua

The only Korean Restaurant we’ve listed in the Nusa Dua area of Bali, this one stands out as one of the best on the island.

Truly authentic Korean cuisine cooked to perfection by the passionate, and very friendly, owner and staff. Our favourite here is the pork belly and kimchi stew, which is unbeatable.

Bibimbap Restaurant – Kuta & Sanur

There are two Bibimbap Restaurants in Bali, one in Kuta and one in Sanur. We paid the one in Sanur a visit while we were over there and we weren’t disappointed.

All of the dishes served here are great, but we really liked the Korean corn tea, so refreshing.

Nami Chikin Korean Street Food – Canggu (Dalung)

This street food style Korean restaurant stands out for its bold flavours and large portion size, all at affordable prices.

A small, modern restaurant, with many of the dishes served on metal plates giving it that street feel.

Yimo Korean Restaurant – Sanur

A chilled-out restaurant over in Sanur which is worth the visit.

This restaurant has the best gyeran-jjim, steamed egg, in Bali.

Moggumung – Seminyak

A hidden gem in Seminyak for anyone craving real Korean BBQ. The beef, pork neck and pork belly here is amazing.

We love to meet here with friends, grill some meats and wash it down with some soju and beer.

This Korean BBQ joint located in the heart of Kuta has premium meats to choose from in a modern, sleek setting.

It’s one of our favourite Korean BBQ spots, we love watching that pork belly sizzle on that table in front of us.

Hyangtogol Korean BBQ Restaurant – Sanur

Another great Korean BBQ spot, this one is located just near Sindhu Night Market in Sanur.

The meat is quality, the service is great and the price is right! Try some kimchi stew to go with your BBQ.

Jejudon Bali – Kuta

Part of a small chain of Korean BBQ restaurants in Indonesia.

As well as Korean BBQ, there are many regular Korean dishes here, including kimchi jjigae which is very good! We saw a few Korean guests eating here last time, which is a sign of authenticity.

Is Korean Food Spicy?

Yes, it can be spicy, it can at times be very spicy, using ingredients such as chilli peppers and spices like gochujang and gochugaru. But not all Korean cuisine is spicy.

If you’re unsure, ask the staff about the various dishes to tailor them to fit your preference.

Why Eat Korean Food When I’m In Indonesia?

Just because you’re in Bali, Indonesia, it doesn’t mean you have to eat only Indonesian food; likewise, you don’t have to be in Korea to enjoy a Korean restaurant or Korean BBQ.

It’s not uncommon to see locals eating in a Korean restaurant either.

Is Soju Strong?

Most commercially sold Soju, particularly the flavoured stuff, is around 12% to 20%, so it’s fairly strong, but be warned, it can be as high as 53%!

What Is Kimchi?

Kimchi is a dish of salted and fermented vegetables, usually cabbage. It’s a staple in Korea and very famous.

You will find it in every Korean restaurant.
