Sushi Bar Bali @ FINNS Beach Club
At FINNS, we like to think the Sushi 8Bar Bali is the best Japanese restaurant in Bali and regular contributors to TripAdvisor tend to concur.
This Japanese kitchen is always ranked in the top 3 spots for Japanese restaurants in Bali by the hyper-critical Balinese, expats and tourists online.
We’re proud of that and we’re proud of the authentic Japanese cuisine that the Sushi Bar Bali serves too.
As you might expect, it makes some of the tastiest sushi rolls on the island and in a wonderful casual dining environment that makes it so easy to graze on the excellent Japanese menu.
We recommend trying everything and then washing it down with some lovely Japanese sake.
Why not make a day of it and enjoy some time at FINNS afterwards? You deserve it.

Sakura Japanese Restaurant @ Melia
The Melia Hotel is a very swanky upmarket venue in the posh part of the island that is Nusa Dua.
The Sakura Japanese Restaurant is their Japanese fine dining experience and it’s absolutely amazing.
We find the service to be among the best on the island and their take on modern Japanese dishes is always exciting and interesting.
They have an extensive menu that includes favourites such as fresh sushi and beef teriyaki and it’s all great food. Their internationally trained chefs cook everything using local ingredients where possible.
To complement the food, why not try their Asian-inspired cocktails? They are absolutely wonderful.

Izakaya By Oku @ The Apurva Kempinski
The Apurva Kempinski is another huge luxury presence in Nusa Dua and it’s home to many of the island’s finest fine dining establishments.
This includes Izakaya by Oku where the food is, of course, all Izakaya style and delicious.
Their take on bento boxes is a pure moment of delight (as though any salaryman is fortunate enough to taste such delicacies on their way to work?) and we love the mobile bar concept.
That is, when you order a cocktail, the bar comes to you and they make your drink in a spectacular and interesting fashion.
There’s only thing better than their a la carte menu and that’s the service from their hyper-attentive staff.

Ling-Ling’s Bali
Ling-Ling’s is a more modest affair than some of the Nusa Dua fine dining establishments and it offers a range of Asian foods under the guise of Japanese aesthetics.
However, it is one of the most popular Japanese restaurants in Bali and that’s because they make some truly delectable Japanese cuisine.
The biggest struggle here is to decide what to sample from the amazing food offerings because the menu is so big.
If you want a more family-friendly, comfortable dining vibe for Japanese food, then this could be what you’re looking for.
The restaurant even has its own cat which is super friendly to diners!

Asian Spice Restaurant @ Rama Residence Padma
There’s plenty of authentic Japanese cuisine to be had at this one of Bali’s best Japanese restaurants. There’s also some great Thai and Vietnamese to be had here too.
We found their prices to be very reasonable, particularly, when you consider that this restaurant is part of a fairly swanky resort.
If you enjoy the delicious food as much as we did at this Japanese restaurant, we can recommend attending one of their cooking classes, where you can learn to make these dishes at home!
One thing you definitely won’t be disappointed with is the portion sizes which are very generous and filling.

Tenkai Japanese Nikkei Restaurant @ Padma Resort Legian
This one of our Best Japanese Restaurants in Bali does some amazing sushi rolls and also um… possibly the best Peruvian food in Bali too.
Yes, we’re not sure what inspired the chefs to pair food from Japan and Peru but they did and it works!
The slow service is a reflection of the relaxed environment and the time it takes to turn fresh fish into fresh sushi and not a sign of disinterest from the wait staff
It’s worth wating for too because after your delicious meal, you will be able to enjoy their incredible green tea ice cream which is the only thing we could think about while writing this review. It’s awesome!

Hamabe Japanese Restaurant @ The Westin Resort, Nusa Dua
The Westin Resort in Nusa Dua is a spectacular place that’s worth visiting even if you don’t visit the Hamabe Japanese Restaurant but we’d be happy to recommend that you do visit the Japanese restaurant for its authentic Japanese cuisine and lovely vibe.
They have definitely mastered the Japanese culinary art form and their traditional Japanese cooking techniques are blended with modern ideas to create authentic Japanese dishes for the 21st century.
This is Japanese fine dining done right and the service reflects the quality of the establishment and the food that it serves.
It’s very family-friendly too thanks to the resort setting and if you want your kids to try the best Japanese restaurants in Bali, you might even start here.

Shichirin Ubud @ Kaamala Resort Ubud by iNi Vie Hospitality
Not all the best Japanese restaurants in Bali are by the sea, in fact, many of them are in the spiritual heart of the island – Ubud.
Shichirin is another excellent resort restaurant and they love to put on a show for their diners.
Watch the chefs juggle with kitchen implements or use towers of flame to cook your meal, you’ll love it!
Their set menus are the best way to sample the authentic Japanese cuisine on offer at this place and you get a flavour of Japanese culture with the food the chefs cook here too.
We really loved the spicy tuna roll and prawn tempura we tried here. It’s got that true Japanese taste that you simply cannot beat.

Kojin Teppanyaki & Omakase Restaurant @ Aksari Resort Ubud by iNi Vie Hospitality
This is almost a sister restaurant to that other one of our best Japanese restaurants in Bali, Shichirin.
However, we suspect that their chefs may be competing against each other for the crown of the best Japanese restaurant in Ubud.
Certainly, the experience of eating at Chef Yuki’s restaurant is one you will never forget and their delicious fusion Japanese teppanyaki is second to none.
We like the way they add a modern twist to traditional Japanese dishes to create a truly contemporary Japanese restaurant experience for their diners.
We were also impressed by their selection of Japanese whiskey and we’d be happy to go back next time we’re in Ubud.

Indigo Canggu
If you love authentic Japanese cuisine but wish there were more vegan and vegetarian options and even gluten-free choices, Indigo might be where you want to go.
Don’t worry, there’s plenty there for the carnivores too, mind you, and their foie gras sushi rolls are really good.
The dishes here are very Instagrammable and we think that’s part of the charm of Indigo.
Some of their customers say it’s a bit pricey but we think that Indigo provides value for money when you consider the quality of the ingredients.

Shima Teppanyaki & Shabu Shabu
If you’ve been hankering after wagyu shabu shabu then look no further because this is a great spot for it.
The restaurant’s internationally trained chefs are renowned for their wagyu and locally caught fresh fish dishes.
The teppanyaki counter of this teppanyaki restaurant is a wonderful thing too and you may not even want to see their extensive menu once you’ve caught sight of what’s on offer.
One thing we really loved at this Japanese restaurant was their local lobster dishes that absolutely made the most of this tasty crustacean.

Ryoshi – House of Jazz
If you like jazz music and affordable but authentic Japanese cuisine in a fairly simple setting, this could be your cup of tea.
We really liked their fresh sashimi and thought the salmon sashimi in particular was a stand-out item on the menu.
And our friends simply couldn’t get enough of the butterfish sashimi which they claim is the best in Bali.
We were also impressed by the sukiyaki-don and yakitori offerings and the price is so reasonable that we can see ourselves going back someday.

Ji Restaurant Bali
Ji is not the most authentic Japanese restaurant in Bali and it tends to do its own thing using Japanese cuisine as a starting point rather than as the ultimate objective.
Sometimes, this works really well and it’s the reason Ji is on our best Japanese restaurants list but sometimes, it can be a bit surprising particularly if you came expecting textbook Japanese cuisine.
It can get quite busy as any Japanese restaurant with a beachfront view tends to and you might need to book in advance to be certain of getting a table at Ji.
One thing we guarantee you will like is the presentation of the food which is very Instagrammable.

Edogin @ Mulia Resort, Nusa Dua
The Mulia Resort (not to be confused with the Melia Resort, also in Nusa Dua) is a very high-end luxury resort and Edogin is its fine-dining Japanese Restaurant.
However, this is a Japanese restaurant that’s not afraid to keep the price of its Japanese cuisine affordable to the masses by offering a Japanese buffet on regular occasions.
And when it does? It’s easily one of the best Japanese restaurants in Bali for the money you will spend.
All the favourites of traditional Japanese cuisine will be present including fresh sashimi and fresh sushi rolls.
You can also find some modern Japanese dishes to graze on and this is a great way to experience new tastes without worrying about wasting money if you don’t like something.
It’s a buffet, you can always go back for something else, right?

Rouge Restaurant Bar & Lounge
Rouge has an emphasis on authentic Japanese cuisine with a healthy eating bent and we find it a very pleasant place to spend some time at.
Try their vegan coconut ramen for a truly unusual experience or their delectable sushi which is very, very good, indeed.
Our only complaint about Rouge is that it’s a bit hard to find if you don’t know Ubud very well and it’s quite a way from the main road network.
Of course, getting lost simply gives you the opportunity to discover more of Bali – so it’s not the end of the world and Google Maps will get you there eventually.

Sushi Ulu Wasabi
This is one of the best places to go if you want a lot of seafood and you’d like most of it turned into delectable sushi rolls.
It’s a very low cost for this kind of food too. We find that Sushi Ulu Wasabi is a Japanese restaurant that offers excellent value for money.
Try the salmon avocado roll and you won’t be disappointed and there’ll be plenty of other great moments during your visit.
We’d also note that if you need to eat your Japanese cuisine on the fly, this restaurant has one of the fastest service speeds we’ve ever seen in Bali!

Bong Pipi @ Imani Suites
Bong Pipi was brought to Bali by the same team as brought Fat Chow to Kuta and as you might expect, it’s a pretty awesome place for Japanese and Asian fusion food.
While the prices are surprisingly low here, the servings aren’t the biggest that we’ve seen and, in fact, we’d encourage them to raise the price and make bigger portions.
However, the joy of small portions is you can order a lot of different food and have room for it all. So, there’s no rush for that price hike.
The toilet is oddly placed in the car park though, maybe they can move that during the refurbishment?
Note: As we go to press this restaurant is temporarily closed for refurbishment. Please call the venue and check to confirm it has reopened before you travel to this Japanese restaurant.

Tetsushin
Tetsushin is one of our top choices of teppanyaki restaurant in Bali and it has an immaculate teppanyaki counter that delivers some truly tasty steak-based Japanese food.
Their Asian-inspired cocktails are a big winner too and we were surprised that Sanur has such a fantastic spot for a sundowner.
Vegans will love the Agedashi tofu and everyone else will love the tuna sashimi.
And don’t miss the mango cheesecake for dessert, it’s exactly what you need to end the night on.

Kajin Japanese Contemporary Sushi
Kajin is an experience and we love sitting at the teppanyaki counter and watching the chefs work here, it’s a fantastic thing to see.
It has a truly Japanese ambience inside and we appreciate the blend of the traditional Japanese dishes with their modern touches.
The hamachi carpaccio was a real standout for us and we’d be happy to eat that on a regular basis.
One warning, however, a recent customer said that the staff did not understand their request for gluten-free food, so if that’s a big deal for you – you might want to try somewhere else from our list.

The Sayan House
The views over the Balinese countryside from this lovely place in Ubud are just stunning.
Even if you didn’t eat, you’d say that you’d come back but you should eat, because the food is awesome.
We recommend arriving early for cocktails and enjoying the sunset before you get down to the serious business of eating.
The staff is very helpful too and if you want anything on the menu (or even your plate) explained, they’ll be happy to walk you through it.

Omiku (Hongalia) Ubud
This lovely place does a mix of Japanese, Chinese, Asian, Indonesian and Malaysian food and while we can’t always tell when one school of cookery ends and another begins we can tell you that it’s always good when it’s at Omiku.
They specialize in Asian home comfort food and the portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable.
Try the rice noodles in their homemade coconut sauce and you’ll be blown away.
We should note that they don’t use MSG in any of their dishes, which can be a big deal when choosing an Asian place to eat in.

Kyoka Japanese Kitchen
Start the night at Kyoka with a “Sakura Tini” (that’s a green tea-infused vodka with Ginger Geish sake and some clarified green tea punch)!
It’ll put you in the perfect mood for some serious Japanese cuisine. Just be warned, there’s a real kick to the cocktails here.
The mixed tempura was excellent on our visit and you simply can’t go wrong with their gyozas.
Our friends loved the tonkotsu ramen on their visit and they still can’t believe how beautiful the presentation of their food was, either.

Rayjin Teppanyaki Dining Bar
The teppanyaki counter here works overtime to create delightful bento box-style teppanyaki meals that absolutely delight the taste buds.
It’s quite a small place though and it can get very busy at peak times of day, so if you want to be guaranteed a seat on arrival – get there early.
We loved their beef yakiniku, the spicy pork kimchi was very different and the buta syougayaki was amazing!
Just one word of warning, they have no idea what the phrase “gluten-free” means and they don’t know how to amend their menu to reduce the gluten in a meal.
So, if this matters to you – it’s best to choose another place to go.

Oishii Bar & Grill Lembongan
Nusa Penida and the other Nusa islands don’t have as many choices of places to go for Japanese cuisine as the rest of Bali, but with the excellent Oishii Bar & Grill, who needs choices?
We kicked off our meal with some tuna carpaccio and it was absolutely excellent.
We were also impressed by the presentation and the serving methods both of which lend themselves nicely to an Instagram feed.

Soya Japanese Restaurant
As you’d expect in Sanur, there’s a heavy emphasis on fish on the menu here and it’s very good, indeed.
The tempura prawn roll is very good, the seafood noodles left us panting for more and the oyakodon was sublime!
We like that there’s a breezy outdoor terrace or a cool air-conditioned room to sit in depending on the weather.
We can also recommend getting there before 5 p.m. for an early evening meal because they have some superb promotions on at that time of day making what is already a reasonably priced meal, cheap.

Sushimi Seminyak Bali
If you love a sushi train then you’re going to be happy at this Seminyak favourite. It’s like Yo! Sushi! in Bali.
We will note that their promotions can sometimes be a bit underwhelming but the overall quality of food is high.
Each individual dish is very cheap but it can add up a bit once you’ve grabbed your 29th plate.
However, the main drawback here is its popularity, at busy times you may be waiting a long time for a seat.

Sushi Koen by Gardin
We like the understated interior aesthetic at Sushi Koen we think it makes the statement that they want to let their food do the talking.
And it speaks good things, in volumes. The sushi is genuinely authentic and we’d be happy to eat plates and plates of it.
All the ingredients used are premium and it’s the kind of place where you expect an A5 Wagyu Ngiir and for it to be awesome and you won’t be disappointed.
The service is also speedy, friendly and efficient which is something of a rarity nowadays.

Deva Sushi
The freshest fish in Bali is often found in Jimbaran Bay and that might explain why Deva Sushi opened up there.
Certainly, given how good this restaurant is, it’s surprising it’s not in one of the busier tourist spots on the island.
We very much enjoyed our recent trip to this place and the selection of fish for their sushi rolls is unmatched.

KO Japanese Restaurant, Teppanyaki & Cocktail Lounge @ InterContinental Bali Resort
They say that your meal at KO is more of an event than a meal and we’ve got to be fair, the teppanyaki counter sees the chefs cook in fascinating and awe-inspiring fashion.
And don’t worry, vegans and vegetarians are catered to just as well as the meat eaters. The staff are happy to remake dishes on the fly to your specific requirements!
Our only complaint is that the menu is, perhaps, too small and thus, it’s hard to justify a repeat visit.
So, just in case you don’t go back, don’t forget to take your camera as this is a very Instagrammable place with a very Japanese interior.

Kuu Izakaya Dining @ Maya Sanur Resort & Spa
This modern and contemporary restaurant is one of the best Japanese restaurants in Sanur.
Skip the outdoor dining though because it’s a bit too close to the road to be enjoyable and take the air-conditioned inside seats instead.
The nigiri and sashimi are excellent here and you won’t be disappointed by anything that you choose.
It’s quite pricey (as you’d expect in the Maya Resort) but there’s no doubt that the quality more than justifies the price.

Maya Sayang Restaurant
Legian has some awesome restaurants and one of them is Maya Sayang which is on a side street comfortably away from the main drag.
The Japanese Beef Curry Rice was a real winner and they offer some international fusion for the more adventurous, we were very tempted by their spicy chicken pizza…
Their happy hour cocktails are great value but don’t order beer unless you want ice in your beer, they don’t refrigerate it.

OK, the service is a little slow in this Legian restaurant but the food is excellent and the price is very fair, indeed.
If you’re looking for a quick Japanese-style sushi lunch with your family, you won’t be disappointed by what you eat here, it’s all good.
However, they do seem to use katsu chicken a lot rather than fresh fish in the sushi rolls which seems a bit odd to us.

It’s a good idea to photograph the elegantly plated food at Shaka Riki before you take the first bite or you will end up sitting there, wishing you had with a happily stuffed smile on your face.
Once you start, you simply won’t want to stop. Uluwatu may not have a lot of Japanese restaurants but with Shaka Riki they don’t really need them, the food here is excellent.

The name means “shadow warrior” which is suitably enigmatic for this hidden gem in Ubud.
We were completely won over by their nagoya-style chicken which is hard to find in Bali and the sauce was so fragrant and the meat so tender, we still dream of it, even now.

Kagura Authentic Japanese Cuisine
We had a lovely prawn katsu curry here and we were very impressed with the service which was speedy and efficient.
It’s a great place to take large groups too, as this restaurant is very much practised in dealing with bigger parties, which is a rare skill in Bali’s Japanese restaurant scene.

Rin @ Conrad Bali
If you love an upmarket Japanese restaurant in Bali then you’re going to love the Rin experience at the Conrad Bali.
The food is lovingly and artistically presented, for maximum Instagram points, and it tastes every bit as good as it looks.

Nagisa Japanese Restaurant @ Hotel Nikko Bali Benoa Beach
This is a very laid-back but authentic Izakaya experience on Benoa Beach. If you love to nibble, graze and chill, this is for you.
We love that it has so many Japanese beers to accompany the food, it feels like a Japanese Pub at times.

TAKE Restaurant
Take is a great place to eat and we love how much of the food prep work is done in full view of the customers. It’s nice to see prawns being properly cleaned, for example.
The karaage chicken is a great starter and there are so many excellent mains that we often feel completely spoiled for choice here.

TYGR Sushi
You know it’s fresh when they make the sushi rolls right out in front of you and that’s exactly how they, ahem, roll at TYGR.
We love the Japanese style interior which has really cool industrial vibes. We also love eating their crisp nori with a side of ice-cold Sapporo beer.

Enso Japanese Fusion & Bar
They’ve definitely captured the Japanese aesthetic at Enso and they are all about minimalist clean lines and light wood.
The food’s pretty good too and we like their Takoyaki and tataki. But we could eat their Salmon Empire Roll all day long. Yum.

The Black Box Provisions Sushi Restaurant
We have to commend Black Box on going plastic-free and we think every restaurant in Bali should be aiming for this.
Their vegan sushi is tasty and we can’t believe the variety of raw and cooked vegan products they have on offer.

Sushi Tei
Sushi Tei is one of the most affordable places to eat sushi in Bali. They have a few branches but the one we like most is the one in the Boardwalk Shopping Centre.
You can expect swift and efficient service and excellent value for money when you visit Sushi Tei.
They have a very extensive menu that provides plenty of sushi, sashimi, rolls and other Japanese dishes to choose from.
Be warned though, it can be very busy at times and there are queues to get in at peak times of the day. It’s not uncommon for late arrivals to have to wait for an hour to get in.
