Yes, there are four abandoned planes on the island that you can visit and another one lurking around somewhere out of sight (maybe at the bottom of a limestone quarry? Who knows?)

The Abandoned Boeing 737 Of South Kuta
This plane was actually bought and paid for by a local businessman and its parked in a spot between some houses, where it remains to this very day.
There are a few stories that people offer to explain this purchase – the first is that the plan was to turn this abandoned plane into a luxury home for the businessman and his family.
Another says that he was hoping to convert this plane into a cinema with an aviation theme and a restaurant.
Finally, the most popular is that he was going to turn this into a tourist attraction of some kind.
There are no current plans to remove it, scrap it or do anything else with it.
This is, by far, the easiest one of our planes to find and it’s about half a kilometre away from Benoa Square and stands right next to a popular branch of Dunkin Donuts.

The Abandoned Boeing 737 On The Bukit Peninsula
This plane is just a short drive from the super popular Pandawa Beach and it’s a photographer’s dream.
You will find the vehicle parked on private property in the remnants of a limestone hill and it’s super photogenic.
The plan for this plane was apparently for it to be transformed into a super hip and trendy restaurant and bar.
As with many projects in Bali, it appears to have died when the purchaser ran out of cash to fund their ambitions and now, it’s simply there for people to take a look at when they want to.
There’s no entrance fee for this and you’re fine to fly drones over this site too which makes for some very cool aerial shots of this abandoned plane.

The Abandoned Boeing 737 In West Bali
This may be the hardest of the abandoned airplanes in Bali to find as it was just dumped in an anonymous field below some pylons and electricity cables.
The locals say that the story behind this plane is that it was meant to be the centrepiece of a new complex with a library, restaurant and cafe.
Why anyone would think this was a good idea, nobody seems to know.
There is also a competing story that says the area is going to be transformed into a villa complex and the plane will be a luxury villa.
We don’t know which story is true, what we do know is that it’s been sat there for an awful long time and there’s no library and no villas.

The DC-10 On The G88 Coworking Space Kerobokan
Gate 88 Mall was meant to be the last word in luxury in Bali with a futuristic theme and hosting many upmarket stores, restaurants, etc.
Yet, when opening day in 2014 arrived, it was clear that the space wasn’t finished and by 2016, only a single restaurant survived among the empty units.
Some genius decided during this period that the mall needed a DC 10 stuck to the roof to attract visitors and there it remains to this day.
Apparently, it was originally part of the British Caledonian passenger fleet, but then ended up in Zimbabwe before being sent to Jakarta to be scrapped.
That’s where our intrepid local businessperson appears to have picked up this fuselage and hauled it back to Bali.
As of today Gate 88 Mall is the G88 Coworking Space.

The Lion Air Fuselage That Remains A Mystery
There was a point of excitement about 10 years back when fascinated tourists reported seeing a plane being driven around the island on the back of a lorry.
Well, in fact, it was just the fuselage of a Lion Air plane that had been bought as part of the get-rich dream of two local businessmen.
However, despite the sort-of recent glimpse of this plane, nobody seems to know where it’s parked now or where it sits and the claims of a new aviation education facility do not seem to have come to fruition.

What about the plane at Nyang Nyang beach?
That is now a luxury villa and it’s not abandoned. Though at the price of $5,000 a night? It won’t be somewhere that you’re likely to find us any time soon.
We have to admit though that the bathtub looks amazing and we’d love to stay there if someone else was paying.

Why Are There Abandoned Planes In Bali?
The theme seems to be fairly simple. Each of these planes is private property but their owner ran out of money and instead of paying for their planes, they abandoned them where they could.
This is good news for us as it means each of them is now a tourist attraction of sorts but by the time a second plane was abandoned in South Bali, it was probably enough.
However, there’s a third in an empty field now and a fourth if you count the one that was installed on top of a luxury mall that never opened.
